The '''Venezuelan constitutional referendum of December 1999''' was held on 15 December 1999 to ratify the proposed [[Constitution of Venezuela]] drafted by the [[1999 Constituent Assembly of Venezuela|1999 National Constituent Assembly]]. The referendum coincided with the 14–16 December torrential rains which caused the [[Vargas tragedy]] in which tens of thousands of people died. The constitution was approved by around 72% of the voters, on a turnout of around 45%.

A constitutional referendum was held in Venezuela on 15 December 1999.[1] Voters were asked whether they approved of the new constitution drawn up by the Constitutional Assembly elected earlier in the year. The question was:

Do you endorse the new Constitution drafted by the National Constituent Assembly?

It was approved by 71.8% of voters, although turnout was only 44.4%.[2]
