A key turning point in development came when Jeremy Blum, founder of the [[Red Orchestra (mod)|Red Orchestra mod]], joined the team with other former Red Orchestra developers. Jeremy took the role of project leader on the team and brought the mod to its first public release in July 2007. Jeremy shortly thereafter went to college and didn't want the team to depend on him while he was distracted so he turned the mod over to the active team. This team put out Beta 2 with some new maps and gameplay tweaks, and planned a Beta 3 that would include redoing many components of the game. This release became more of a myth than a reality, and when Jeremy Blum felt the brand's design direction was in jeopardy he came back, formed a studio and started developing [http://www.insurgency2.com INSURGENCY 2] with many of the mod's original developers who had ascended into the industry.

Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat is a total conversion mod for Valve Software's Source Engine. Insurgency is a multiplayer, tactical first person shooter, and implements elements of realism, in an attempt to increase player immersion and promote teamwork. The game is primarily set in Iraq, however some maps are set in Afghanistan.

Gameplay

Insurgency is primarily a team-based, multiplayer online shooter focused on tactical, objective-based gameplay. The player can join one of two teams, the US Marines, or their adversaries, the Insurgents. Teams are structured around two squads, for a total of 16 maximum players per team. Within this team structure are limited player classes, such as the Rifleman, Support Gunner, Engineer, or Marksman.

The game has a pseudo-realistic portrayal of the weaponry used. There is no on-screen crosshair and the players must use the iron sights of the game's weapon model to accurately aim the weapon. Shooting "from the hip" is still possible; however, the free-aim system makes this difficult. Weapons are also deadly, with most rifles capable of taking out players with one or two shots to the torso. According to their class, players can also use fragmentation grenades, smoke grenades, and RPGs.

Maps are generally focused on urban warfare, even though there are suburban and outdoor settings.

Development history

The development of Operation: Counter-Insurgency (OPCOIN) started in 2002, when Andrew Spearin decided to create a realistic modern infantry squad-based multiplayer first-person-shooter based on his experiences in the Canadian Army.[1]

Key turning points in development came when Jeremy Blum[2], founder of the Red Orchestra mod, joined the team with other former Red Orchestra developers; and when James Mansfield joined and became Lead Programmer. Shortly after their arrival the project was officially renamed from Operation: Counter-Insurgency to simply INSURGENCY and full production started and continued until the first public release in July 2007.

Recognition

INSURGENCY: Modern Infantry Combat was downloaded by over 1 million people in the mod's first week of launch.

It later received the Player's Choice 2007 Mod of the Year award from ModDB,[3] as well as the "Best Source Mod of 2007" Gold Award from Steamfriends.[4]

Aftermath

In 2012, INSURGENCY 2 was announced, being developed by a newly formed studio in Denver, Colorado called New World Interactive (NWI).

The development team consists of many of the original developers behind INSURGENCY and intends to "take the franchise to the next level." According to recent comments by NWI they intend to keep the feel and teamwork-oriented nature of the game and at the same time make the learning curve easier and the game more visually impressive using the latest iteration of Source Engine. The game will eventually be for purchase on Steam.
