The Walnut High's Boys Cross Country team won their CIF-SS Division for the first time in 1986 and again in 1987. Also, in 1987, the boys cross country team won the medium-sized school California State Cross Country Championships and missed the 1988 Championship by one point, both held in Fresno, CA. They were Undefeated Sierra League Champions in 1985 and Undefeated Valle Vista League Champions in 1986, 1987 and 1988 which capped a 4-year undefeated dual meet string for the truly remarkable 1985 Freshman Class. |

In 2010, the Varsity Girl's Water Polo Team won the CIF Championships. The girls were led by Coach Ruh, who has worked for Walnut High School for several years and also played polo and swam for Walnut in her high school years. The CIF win was a first for the school, where they played Los Altos High School. |

Also in 2010, the Varsity Girl's Swim Team won the CIF Division II Championships. Once again, the team was led by Coach Ruh. Essentially, four girls single-handedly won the meet - Andrea Grant, Tiffany Hsu, Christina Vu, and Emily Yu. This was not the first CIF championship for girls swimming but it was the first championship of the millennium. Grant placed first in the 50 yard freestyle with a 23.48 and the 100 yard freestyle with a 50.87. Yu placed third in the 100 yard breast stroke with a 1:04.50 and fourth in the 100 yard butterfly with a 56.31. Vu placed fourteenth in the 200 yard freestyle with a 1:57.54 and twelfth in the 100 yard freestyle with a 54.08. Vu, Yu, Grant, and Hsu won the 200 yard freestyle relay with a 1:37.81, just one-thousandths of a second slower than the meet record. The same relay placed second in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a 3:32.01. |

Walnut High School is located in Walnut, California, among the San Jose Hills of the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California. It is a public school in the Walnut Valley Unified School District. The school is a two-time National Blue Ribbon school[1] and five-time California Distinguished school (1991, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2005 and 2009).[2] It has also offered the International Baccalaureate program since 1999.
History
Ernest Carrey, son of Pierre Carrey, found employment on a Walnut ranch and used the money he earned to purchase the site of present day Walnut High School. His son, Robert Carrey, was one of the first Walnut City Council members, and held meetings in his garage. He helped to build the first City Hall in Walnut. Carrey and Pierre Roads honor this family’s contributions to the City of Walnut.[citation needed]
Walnut High School was established in 1968.
Information
Walnut High School is a highly academically concentrated school, with more than 1,500 students actively participating in programs such as AP (Advanced Placement) and IB (International Baccalaureate). Also, Walnut High School has over 1,000 students in their 9th and 10th grade Pre-IB program, which prepares them for the IB Diploma Programme.
The Administrative Structure: Walnut High School's administrative structure includes one Principal, one Assistant Principal, four Instructional Deans, eight Grade Level Coordinators, an Athletic Director, an Operations Manager, and the Associated Student Body Director. There are no department heads, but the three Instructional Deans each have an aspect of the curriculum they are responsible for supervising. The duties of each dean include selection of textbooks, instructional media, supervision and evaluation of teachers, and planning the improvement of instruction. Walnut High School recently removed one Instruction Dean position, Visual Arts and Technology, due to recent state budget cuts. The removed position has been filled by expanded duties for the three Instruction Deans.
The Grade Level Coordinator (GLC) program replaced the traditional counselor system at Walnut in 1984 with a holistic approach to counseling. The GLCs are supervised by the Assistant Principal and each has approximately 350 students they interact with on a regular basis. This includes 8th grade orientation, summer registration, college counseling, personal counseling, student discipline, and attendance. GLCs are also responsible for campus supervision and often act as community liaisons.
The Operations Manager is responsible for the overall operation of the school facilities. His duties include supervision of custodial services, and classified staff. The position also includes coordination of all school events, as well as budgetary and payroll issues.
Athletics
The Walnut High football team contends in Division I of CIF[3] . Although they have not won any CIF football championships, it was a high-ranking regular season team in the 1972, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1980, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 2002, 2003, 2004 seasons. They also made the CIF Division VII finals in 2002, and although they lost the final game, the team was brought to another level.[citation needed]
