Musical Style

Dream Theater is well noted for being one of the early progenitors of the Progressive Metal genre ^[1]. The original three members, John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy all had strong influences from bands such as Rush, Yes, Iron Maiden, various Speed Metal bands, and even the Hair Metal of the date ^[2]. This synthesis created a unique metal that was not traditional of the day: it had distorted guitars and fast riffing, but the music focused more on technical proficiency and precise execution than on heavy metal riffs. The band's music has focused on three main elements: metal, melodic, and prog. This can be seen on any album: for example, Images and Words, the song Pull Me Under is a heavy metal song, but is followed by Another Day, a soft melodic song. This musical diversity is what makes Dream Theater's style unique from most other metal bands of their day.
