Google Spreadsheets is a Web-based spreadsheet application offered by Google. It allows users to create and edit spreadsheets online while collaborating in real-time with other users. Google announced June 6, 2006 at 1 p.m. (UTC) as the date for a test launch of Google Spreadsheets, available to a limited number of users on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Features

  • Automatic saving of work in progress.
  • Importing of Microsoft Excel (XLS) files and comma-separated values (CSV) files.
  • Exporting of Microsoft Excel (XLS), comma-separated values (CSV), and HTML files.
  • Spreadsheet sharing through e-mail.
  • Real-time collaboration through in-document chat.
  • Sorting, formatting, and numerous mathematical formulas.

Usage

Google Spreadsheets offers many of the basic features offered in alternative software, such as Microsoft Excel, including formatting, formulas and sorting.

Currently there are some obstacles to overcome before it could be considered a viable alternative to tried and tested software. Printing of the spreadsheets loaded or created in Google Spreadsheets is unusable for any real purposes as areas are blank or overlayed on another part of the page. Security is another issue that poses a threat to any use of this program for private or sensitive data. Google Spreadsheets is not accessible through a encrypted HTTPS connection for instance. In addition, the program does not support certain browsers, such as Opera.
