Out of Practice is a CBS comedy television series that premiered in September 2005. It was officially cancelled on 17 May, 2006 at the CBS upfront presentation.
Premise
Out of Practice is a comedy from multiple Emmy Award winning producers Joe Keenan and Christopher Lloyd, about a family of physicians, who, although all doctors, have little in common.
Ben Barnes (played by Christopher Gorham) is the youngest son in this dysfunctional family of doctors. However, as a marriage counselor, he is seen as a lesser doctor than most by the rest of his family.
His father, Stewart Barnes (Henry Winkler), is a gastroenterologist who is happy to be free from the influence of his ex-wife, Lydia Barnes (Stockard Channing), a status-conscious cardiologist and mother of three children.
Ben's brother, Oliver Barnes (Ty Burrell), is a self-centered plastic surgeon who enjoys dating attractive women.
Lastly, his sister, Regina Barnes (Paula Marshall), is a lesbian E.R. doctor who, like her brother Oliver, is infatuated with attractive women.
The show aired 14 episodes in its first (and only) season. It aired on CBS on Monday nights at 9:30 ET/PT. Rumors of cancellation circulated after The New Adventures of Old Christine was given their time slot. In an interview, however, Burrell asserted that, "We're going on hiatus from the air for two months, but we're coming back in March with all new shows." Two more episodes aired on Wednesday, March 22 and March 29 at 8 ET/PT to low ratings, and the show was cancelled soon after.
