The Yale Banner is the oldest collegiate yearbook in the United States. It was first circulated as a student newspaper in 1841, and in 1845 began circulating as an annual history of student life at Yale College.

History

Origins

The Yale Banner was first circulated as a weekly student newspaper in 1841 in response to a conflict between Yale College students and the New Haven Fire Department. Yale students were accused of being "public nuisances" by a local paper, and in response, the Banner was published to voice the students' account of the incident.

After the fervor surrounding the conflict had died down, the Banner began to publish membership in Yale Societies, Yale College enrollment, and the insignia of various societies and eating clubs on campus.

In 1865, the Scroll and Key society published the Pot Pourri, a publication that mirrored the contents of the Banner in pamphlet form. In 1908, these two publications merged to form the Yale Banner and Pot Pourri, and some 30 years later the name was shortened to Yale Banner.

Association of Yale Alumni

The Yale Banner remained a Student Organization at Yale College until 1995, when it was absorbed by the Association of Yale Alumni following financial mismanagement by students, who took out over $150,000 in loans to buy new equipment.

Current Leadership and Staff

In 2010, the Banner passed again into the hands of Yale Undergraduate Students. Their team of graphic designers, photographers, editors, and reporters operates out of their historic offices on Yale's Central Campus.
