Two retired NRL veterans appeared for their former teams during the Nines. Former Sydney Roosters premiership captain Brad Fittler, who retired from playing following the 2004 Grand Final, made a comeback at the age of 42 and showed he had lost nothing in his 10 years on the sidelines. In his first game for the Roosters he intercepted a pass from Brisbane's David Stagg and raced 75 metres to score. Also appearing was Manly Sea Eagles legendary try scorer Steven Menzies who had not played in the NRL since Manly's 40-0 demolition of Melbourne in the 2008 Grand Final in which he scored his 180th career try (also his 349th game). He also showed age had not slowed him with some vintage cover tackles for the Sea Eagles. Unlike his former Australian and New South Wales team mate Fittler, Menzies had only retired from playing for the Catalans Dragons (France) at the end of the 2013 Super League season at the age of 39.

The 2014 NRL Auckland Nines (known as the Dick Smith NRL Auckland Nines for sponsorship reasons[1]) is the first NRL Auckland Nines tournament, contested between all sixteen teams of the National Rugby League. The draw was released on 30 October 2013.[2][3] It will be a two-day, nine-a-side, knock-out tournament held at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand. All sixteen NRL clubs and 256 players will compete over the one weekend with AUD$2.25 million prize money to be split between the teams.

Rules

There are a number of rule variations that will be implemented to ensure the games are much faster and ensure fewer delays and stoppages.[4] The major Rule changes that differ from regular NRL games are:

• Two nine minute halves with a two minute half time period.
• Nine players a side with six unlimited interchange players.
• Scrums will only form after a double knock on, with attacking teams to elect which side to feed the ball.
• No video referee, with one on-field referee.
• Five minute golden try period in qualifying rounds with a draw to be deemed if there is no result, while unlimited golden try for the finals.
• A tap restart will take place after a 40/20
• Five points for a try scored in the bonus zone under the posts, with two point drop kick conversion attempts.
• The scoring team will have a drop kick off to restart play.
• Five minute sin bins.
• Five tackles in a set.
