My apologies. Upon looking at the information, I see now why you were removing the template. I monitor the recent changes, and your removing a large portion of content repeatedly without justifying it in the edit summary appeared suspicious and was reverted. To avoid confusion in the future, may I suggest that you make use of the edit summary? This will ensure that any edits you that make in good faith aren't immediately reverted. Why i edit International RL Players

How can players just be called an Australian player when they havent played for them even when they have what about the other country they are allowed to represent are they just forgotten and the international rl eligibilty rule is a joke hayne can play for fiji one year then play for australia and tonie carrol can play for australia and new zealand so it doesnt matter any way as to what international rl category they are as long as they are able to represent them if they have a grand father/mother or father then they can play for them and i have to edit the international league pages to show how much players can represent the weaker teams for people who dont know much about international league i hope you understand why edit the way i do and hope you let me continue my editing in the future as its only fair to include all the countries they are able to represent under the current eligibility rules.58.165.209.77 (talk) 10:36, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RL players are called Australian even when they haven't represented Australia because they have Australian nationality. Offiah doesn't have a Nigerian passport, wasn't born there, didn't grow up there and didn't play representative sport for them.GordyB (talk) 12:46, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding cats to this. This was the continent I was least looking forward too (too many damn countries - Asia would be in the same boat, if more Asians played!)

I can't say I approve of your edit summary; where I'm from that's a bit callous, and very pointy, to say the least. And you're right in the sense that it doesn't redirect to African-Americans, but oh so wrong in all other senses: the term has its own article. Referring to people as sub-humans because of the sport they play doesn't count as "callous"? Some double standard there. Thanks. I was unsure whether it was real or not. Maybe someone saw the name "rugby football", and changed it to "soccer" I don't know. Soviet Union

Thanks for the edit. I would appreciate any comments on the article... I think currently it talks a bit too much about the political set up, although this is important.

However, I've just come up with a new piece of evidence, which suggests that rugby football was indeed played in Russia as far back as the 1880s (which puts it way before the split, and the 1908 date given). What's more surprising, perhaps, is that it transpires that rugby may predate soccer in the Russian Empire!

I've gone through a book by James Riordan called Sport in the Soviet Union, which was published back in the 1970s. It's turned out to be a real goldmine, and has resolved some of the contradictory information that I had been given in sources elsewhere (such as rugby being banned during a period in which other sources claim it was being played). There isn't a vast amount on rugby union in it, but more than enough to go on, and what's there is more than enough to sort out a few of the issues.--MacRusgail (talk) 16:39, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your kind advice. I need to get the Huw Richards information in there, and also I'll try and fill out the story of Llanelli in Moscow which looks an interesting one. It's been hard to track down some of the information - I've even used the National Library of Scotland to source some of it. My philosophy is that while most readers of Wikipedia will head for articles on the 6N, Jonny & Jonah, that they're well served elsewhere (online and off), and that it is difficult (impossible?) for us to improve on them. However, on a subject like this, I think it's quite possible for us to be the best - probably also on Tier 2 nations as well. The article should have stuff in it, which one can't find elsewhere online (at least not in English)

Still, I reckon Soviet rugby must be a big historical "what if?" If the USSR had survived a decade more, and if they had got into the first RWC, then I think we would have seen teams of at least the calibre of Romania. (Probably full of steroids and shamateurs!) Instead they took the huff at SA, which wasn't even in it, and by the time '91 had come around, the USSR was dead. (Which was good in some ways, but a disaster for the game). Unless the old SA etc counts, and pre-WWII Italy and Japan, rugby doesn't seem to thrive in dictatorships.
