Sophie Hunter is a British theatre director, actress, and singer. She is best known for directing the 2010 revival of Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts at Access Theatre in Broadway, and winning the Samuel Beckett Award for writing and directing the experimental theatre play The Terrific Electric at the Barbican Centre in 2007.[1][2][3]

In addition to directing, she has also acted in film and television and has recorded the French-language music album The Isis Project released in 2005.[4][5][6][7]

Education and training

After studying French and Italian languages at Oxford University, Hunter moved to Paris to study avant-garde theatre for two years at the L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq.[8][9][10] She has also trained at the SITI Company in New York City under the mentorship of Anne Bogart.[11]

Career

Since graduating from L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, Hunter has devised, developed, directed and performed in theatre and performance pieces throughout Europe as well as the Middle East and North America like Silverland (Arcola, Brits Off Broadway NYC), Hamlet (Al Bustaan Festival, Beirut), Volpone (Avignon Festival), Ubu Roi (BAC).[12][13][14] In 2007, she was awarded the prestigious Samuel Beckett Award for writing and directing the experimental theatre play The Terrific Electric at the Barbican Centre. She also directed the 2010 revival of Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts at Access Theatre in Broadway, the 2013 avant-garde play The Shackleton Project at Tryon Festival Theatre in Urbana, Illinois. In addition, she is the co-founder of Lacuna Theatre Company and artistic director of the Boiler Room. Hunter is also associate director at Broadhurst Theatre and collaborative director of the marionette and puppetry production company Phantom Limb in New York City.[15][16][17][18]

Hunter has also tackled performative approaches to opera.[19] She has collaborated on a production of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte (performances in France and London) and Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia (New York), Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen (Italy), Mozart's The Magic Flute (African tour), and Beethoven's Fidelio (Palestine).[20] She has also acted in television and film.[21]

In addition to directing and acting, Hunter is also a professional singer and has collaborated with songwriter Guy Chambers in her French-language music album The Isis Project.[22][23]
