The fort was built in order to protect Portuguese's interest in Jaffna. During Dutch period, the square shaped fort had two bastions. In 1805, British built a rest house at the fort. The fort was under the control of Sri Lankan Army and LTTE during the civil war. But, now is accessible to the public. The Pooneryn fort is located in Pooneryn that adjacent to the Jaffna Peninsula. It was built by Portuguese to protect its possessions in Jaffna. It was fallen to Dutch in 1658, and British captured in 1796.[1]

The fort was built in order to protect Portuguese's interest in Jaffna. During Dutch period, the square shaped fort had two bastions. In 1805, British built a rest house at the fort. The fort was under the control of Sri Lankan Army and LTTE during the civil war. But, now is accessible to the public. Even though, its remains are in bad condition.[2]
