Lilly Singh (pronounced [lɪlɪ sɪŋɡʱ]; born 26 September 1988), also known by her YouTube pseudonym Superwoman (styled "IISuperwomanII"), is a Canadian YouTube personality, motivational speaker and comedian. She has also taken part in rapping and film acting. After beginning her channel in 2010, her videos have gathered over 500 million views and her channel has over 4.8 million subscribers. She is particularly known for her satirical takes on everyday life.

Early life and background

Lilly Singh was born on 26 September 1988 in Scarborough, Ontario in Canada, to parents from Punjab, India. Singh has described herself as a tomboy during her childhood years.[1][2] She attended Mary Shadd Public School during her elementary years and high school at Lester B. Pearson Collegiate Institute.[3] She has a degree in Psychology from York University.[2] Despite living in Canada for most of her life, Singh shares a strong connection with her Punjabi heritage, and says that she likes visiting India.[4]

Career

While growing up, Singh aspired to be some sort of entertainer, though was unsure of what field to pursue. She came up with the concept of "Superwoman" at a young age, after she had heard a song of the same name and found a ring with the superwoman logo.[4][5] In 2010, Singh decided to start her YouTube channel under that pseudonym (her channel is called "IISuperwomanII").[6] Singh says that one of the reasons she decided to pursue a career as a YouTube entertainer was due to the "lack of a female presence especially within the South Asian community."[7] She also has expressed a desire to raise awareness of the ignorance within the South Asian community through her videos: "There’s ignorance in every single community and I’m well aware of that; but I think because I’ve been more exposed to ignorance in the South Asian community – especially in relation to divorced or single mothers, abuse, racism and homophobia – it irritates me."[8]

The Indian culture is a major inspiration for her videos and she has gained popularity for her satirical takes on everyday life and activities people complain about.[5] Some of her popular videos include "How Girls Get Ready", "Types of Kids at School", "Girls On Their Periods" and "My Parents Reacting to.." videos.[5][9][10] Singh also creates vlogs on a separate channel called "SuperwomanVlogs".[11] In addition to her solo acts, she has collaborated with other YouTube entertainers such as Ryan Higa, Miranda Sings and Kingsley, as well as Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit.[5] As of January 2015, her channel has over 4.8 million subscribers and her videos have holistically gathered over 500 million views.[6]

In addition to making YouTube videos, Singh is a motivational speaker and performs stand-up comedy.[4][5] She has a website under the name "Unicorn Island", which sells clothes based on her YouTube persona.[12] In August 2013, Singh featured in the song "Hipshaker" alongside Jassi Sidhu. In March 2014, Singh performed the rap part of the song "Mauj Ki Malharein", which featured in the Bollywood drama Gulaab Gang.[13] In July, she released a song titled "#LEH" in a collaboration with Humble The Poet.[14] Singh also had a small part in the Indo-Canadian production Dr. Cabbie (2014), which featured Kunal Nayyar in the lead.[15]

In 2014, Singh's YouTube Channel, ||Superwoman||, was listed on New Media Rockstars Top 100 Channels, ranked at #39.[16]
