Version One Ventures is a Vancouver-based, early-stage investment fund company founded by Boris Wertz[1] and managed by his associate Angela Tran Kingyens. The company provides investments to startups, primarily in SaaS and marketplace industries;[2] the company invests in small technological, mobile, online industries.[3]

In the beginning of his career as an investment angel, Wertz's funds ranged from $250K to $750K[4] but he later created a firm to raise funds for his ventures. In 2012, his investments were largely drawn from an $18.7MM fund. In October of last year (2014), Version One announced the receipt of its second investment of $35 Million by Northleaf Venture Catalyst Fund and LP BDC Capital.[5][6] Up to this point, Version One Ventures has made 37 investments in 23 companies such as Volley, Frank & Oak, VarageSale, Figure 1, Wattpad, and Shippo.[7]

Company History

Version One Ventures was founded in July of 2012[8] by Boris Wertz. That year, Wertz raised $18.7MM through external investors and used those funds to invest in 20 startups. He raised $35MM worth in funds in 2014. SunnyTrail Insight Labs is the first company funded by Version One with an investment of $150K and his largest investment to date of $20M was earned by Clio as a Series C investment in March of 2014.

Boris Wertz

Boris Wertz started as an entrepreneur in 1999 founding the German company Just Books. This company was later purchased by Amazon.com in 2008,[9] which spurred Wertz to make the transition from entrepreneur to investor. He has now been an investor for approximately seven years,[10] and is on the board for the firm Andreessen Howitz[11] based in Silicon Valley.
