Cornell Community centre is a 129 000 square foot centre[3], located at 3201 Bur Oak Ave, Markham, ON L6B 0T2[4] One of the newest community centers in the City of Markham. It was opened on December 17, 2012, including many features. This community center is connected to Markham Stouffville Hospital allowing many different facilities for patients, such as the older adults room, and many health conferences. Many elder patients enjoy watching swimmers, or kids play in the indoor playground. The Library also has a whole section dedicated to health, diseases, and hospital uses. [5]
Features Offered
Indoor playground
There is a two story indoor playground with slides, rock climbing, children gym equipment, and lots more. Drop in hours are scheduled for parents to bring their children. Advanced registration is not required, and parents are responsible for supervision of their child.[6] The Indoor playground is available for rentals.
Rehearsal Hall
The rehearsal hall is what makes Cornell unique, being the only community centre with one. It seats 200 in a theater format. Performances and presentations are usually done in this room as it includes surround sound, soundproof walls, and a projector screen. The rehearsal hall is available for rentals.
Library
The Library has a vast variety of graphic novels, movies, books and audiobooks. Comfortable seating through the library with a fireplace lounge, café, teen area lounge with gaming available, media wall, and over a dozen study rooms. In the children area it includes easy readers, kids movies, toys for learning and interaction. Also throughout the whole library more than 30 computers are offered.[7]
Swimming facility
Cornell includes three different pool areas. The 8 lane 25 meters lap pool, a therapeutic pool, water slide, splash pad area and shallow water pool. Many swimming competitions take place in this facility, including teams from all over the GTA. Pool rentals are available for parties or private uses.
Fitness centre
When you are a member of City of Markham's fitness centre you are eligible to use any fitness centre in Markham, which includes Cornell, Thornhill, Centennial, and Markham Pan Am Fitness Centre.[8] In Cornell they offer an indoor running/walking 400 meters track, dance studio, a huge variety of exercise machine or free weights. Fitness members have an inclusive change room which includes a sauna and hot tub.
Gymnasium
The gymnasium is a triple gymnasium size fitting one full size basketball court and one half size. Many programs are ran in the gymnasium such as variety of sports camps, drop in sports, different presentations, and competitions. The Gymnasium is available for rentals.
Multi-purpose rooms
Within the centre, there are three multi-purpose rooms, an older adults room, and youth room. Programs are ran in these rooms such as arts and craft, drum, first aid, and many different lessons. In the youth room, youths are welcome to come and play many board games and video games; they also have table tennis. All of these rooms are available for rentals.
Rental Information
Facilities that are available for rental include gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, rehearsal hall, swimming pool, and indoor playground.[9] Many rent these facilities for parties, meeting/conferences, tournaments and many more.
