  • Could some of you take a look at the Swim Ireland page? Specifically, should there be a separate page for IASA - the previous name for Swim Ireland before the litany of child rape, abuse and murder carried out by its senior officers came to light. I don't want to edit this page any more as I feel too strongly about it. Thanks, Curtains99 20:45, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is there a way to fix the Daniel O'Connell page...specifically where it says that his head was severed from his body? Fact: his heart was embalmed and buried in the Irish College in Rome; his body was otherwise returned intact to Dublin.
  • Talk:Province of Maryland needs attention about the Kingdom of Ireland's part in its making. Opponent believes in the Anglocentric version presented by those imperialists a la Ulster and Cromwell and is fundamentalist about it. Tells me to quit personal attacks, but his arguments remind me of those made by Ian Paisley and other Orangists. Whereas Irish Americans still get in a ruckus over the British and American Protestant prejudices, there would be none if you "took it back" from them and reclaimed Maryland's original heritage. If you didn't do that, then the situation would be like the sons of those oppressed by Cromwell never rose to free themselves from the Protestant Ascendancy. My opponent disputes the worth of an Irish Catholic peer, in right of a King of Ireland as palatine lord of the province. That was the only Irish colony ever, aside from Avalonia in Newfoundland. Hasbro 19:01, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • That was the only Irish colony ever Really? What about Scotland, the Isle of Man, several Welsh kingdoms, Iceland, not to mention large sections of New York, Boston, Baltimore, New Orleans, Philidelphia, Pittsburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, London ...? Fergananim 12:13, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Morris Tribunal hasn't been updated since July and could do with an update following yesterday's publication of further reports. Unfortunately I don't know too much about it bar what I've read in today's newspapers or heard on radio. Bastun 23:18, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • David McDonnell:
  • I've made a biographical stub for the Diceman and added relevant links and categories. I'm not 100% sure about the birth date, but if anyone could point me to an authoritative source, I'd be glad to check it. Autarch 19:26, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Cities in Ireland Okay, sorry to annoy people about this again. But we seriously need 3rd party arbitration for this article. A large amount of my edits on the talk page are being either reverted or re-phrased. I can't fix problems on the article itself without them being instantly reverted. Because somebody restored (which djegan had reverted) my version of the article earlier, he is now wantonly placing all sorts of notices all over the page, and as I say, I cannot even fix the problems that I know exist! Please help! merlante 22:37, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Its nothing personal but if we are going to add disputed claims then these need to be appropriately cited, without reference to the talk page. Falsehoods are not going to become facts whilst I am around here. Its that simple. Djegan 21:49, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Cities in Ireland Lads, we really need some help sorting this out. We have two views on city status in Ireland that can't be resolved by the two people currently examining the article. I think that 'cities in ireland' is a very important topic that needs to be sorted out as soon as possible. It should be possible to bring to an end the perpetual confusion that exists on this topic. The arguments are involved but both are summarised at the end of the Talk page under 'City Status & What is a city? (An attempt to break down the arguments to their most basic terms.)'. merlante 11:48, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Cities in Ireland A couple of hours work entirely reverted from by Djegan. I would appreciate it if a few people read the talk page, compare my revision to the current one, so that we could come to some 'consensus' on the correct version! (Although I am surprised there was any 'consensus', other than apathy, for the previous/current version!) My opinion is that, win, lose or draw, the article badly needs to be clarified and expanded. merlante 20:45, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Djegan appears to have decided that Dun Laoghaire and Tallaght aren't part of Dublin. If anybody thinks otherwise some support on the discussion page would be good. Caveat lector 23:43, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You ough' to read the talk page first - especially regarding population. The issue has received consensus from several editors - applying that consensus does not make me a dictator. If people have opinions either way then they are welcome to discuss it on the talk page. Djegan 18:13, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've created an article for the Ross Errilly Friary outside Headford, Co. Galway. My interest in the site is personal, as it's near my mother's hometown and I've visited it many times. I wrote the article based on information from a single, 19th C. tertiary source and the plaque from Heritage Ireland which is located at the site. I'd love to see it get some attention from people who are relative experts on medieval Ireland. Dppowell 03:06, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry Jtd, thanks to you efforts, no-one could be in any doubt about the fact you have a problem now :) --feline1 16:05, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
IMHO, the most recent edit by an alleged offender reads like a good faith attempt at NPOV, though I make that assessment without having checked his references.Dppowell 16:55, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually the Trinity Brian Boru harp is an amalgam of three parts.
It is an 18th century recreation or restoration.
The curve (with the 30 tuning pins) is 14th century
(see: The Irish Harp by Joan Rimmer, Mercier Press, 1969)
The base and sound box are 18th century, The forepillar is another addition.
Hate to break it to you, but the Brian Boru Harp is not original. The probability is that the restores took the curve and added pieces to make it look like the clàrsach. ClemMcGann 20:09, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So everyone is wrong and talking through their silly assholes! Actually ClemMcGann if true doesn't contradict my veracity. 86.42.136.115 09:21, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Lets not get down to the level of personal attacks but weither the Brian Boru harp is Irish or Scottish in origin is neither here nor their. Its of academic interest only. The coat of arms of Ireland is is symbol of Ireland - nothing can change that - its not an exact copy of the Brian Boru harp. Djegan 09:46, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • An admin deleted my self made image for the Green Book article. Can anyone explain what I should do about the GFDL image? He says I dont own copyright, but the people who own copyright are the PIRA? User talk:Angr for details, but reply back here please. Thanks.
  • Greystones keeps being hammered, like this [1], though not daily, with the addition of so-called famous residents plus POV comments about the future developments of the harbour for the last couple of months. Can some admin, or more experienced user, have a look and see if we can stop it? Unfortunately it seems to be the same user though connected by different Irish IP addresses. I am not sure I can really call it vandalism but it is certainly a close call IMHO. Thanks ww2censor 21:01, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen that picture in a few articles. The deleted Rory Conroy one I think. I've tagged the picture for deletion. Stu ’Bout ye! 11:44, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can y'all keep an eye on the article? More vandalism. Ian Cheese 17:30, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hollymount1 (talk · contribs) appears to be adding a link to their Genealogical web site to every town around Mayo, which seems over kill/spamming to me. I've reverted some (except the one for County Mayo, where I believe it's appropiate), but don't want to take any further action personally. Regards, MartinRe 12:20, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Galway International Oyster Festival was redlinked, but I've added a reasonably basic stub. There's lots of google hits, and info on offical web site if anyone with better writing skills than me (i.e. everyone :) wants to add some details to "one the 12 greatest shows on earth" (Finding the exact source for that claim was tricky, but very satisfying!) :) MartinRe 21:53, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I suggest a permanent ban be imposed upon User talk:68.35.182.234, aka Bcsurvivor, aka Devin79 and indeed any other such editor who causes as much hassle on any article. I see absolutly no reason why we should be reasonable to unreasonable people. Fergananim 20:41, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • I don't know what Fergananim is talking about. I'm shocked that he or anyone else is completely against discussions. I don't even have a particular interest in this subject. I simply posted a few questions on a talk page. I didn't make major changes to any articles regarding Irish history as far as I recall. I haven't even had time to go back and continue reading the talk page on the Irish history article in question. I think that people should think twice before even talking about imposing "a permanent ban" on anyone - especially for such inconsequential reasons. Bcsurvivor 17:43, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd like to see more articles on IRA and German Intelligence in 1938-1945 period to offset the POV of media reports like this Statue of Nazi ally vandalised The Observer, 2 January 2005. If people are coming here to get the facts behind the news release, then they won't find much at present. There doesn't seem to be an awful lot on the IRA / Nazi collusion, and the entire 1940 - 1956 period seems a little barren also. Barren for an Encyclopedia I mean. Can someone advise on how to proceed seeing if there are any parties with a proven interest in the period willing to split up the work? Thanks- im a new user. Fluffy999 04:28, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • As a new user, I would suggest it might be better starting on a slightly less controversial topic! :) There's a lot of reading in the wiki policies (included in your welcome message) and it takes much hard work to apply these to controversial articles, even for experienced editors. In a nutshell, infomation should be wrtten in a neutral tone, and be verifable from reliable sources. For mainstream articles, this can be straightforward, but for others, not so. Wikipedia:Guidelines for controversial articles gives some idea on how much more difficult it can be. Happy editing, whatever you choose. MartinRe 09:58, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Setting up a project page is one way of going about it and I've set up a IRA and Germany 1938-1945 Project page where you and your colloborators can discuss this in more detail.
A brief look at the edit history pages of articles Irish Republican Army (1922–1969), Seán Russell, Frank Ryan, List of IRA Chiefs of Staff, etc., will give you a fair idea of who is interested in this area and who has been ploughing a lonely furrow in the months and years before you joined Wikipedia. I suggest you approach them with your proposals and gracefully accept any offers of help or assistance that come your way.
A word of warning, though: Wikipedia should not be considered a repository where every single IRA action from 1939 to 1945 should be listed. Wikipedia is not an annal but an encyclopadia.--Damac 10:28, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I wish to bring to people's attention the contributions of User:Fluffy999. A new user, he has made some worthy contributions to Wikipedia. However, he pays no attention to issues of grammar, format, style, etc., when contributing. As his most recent "contribution" – Northern Campaign (IRA) – shows, he seems to be under the impression that it is enough for him to post up chunks of facts and extracts from secondary sources, rendered in chronological order, and to leave the copyediting, linking, etc., to others. He even says that on the article's talk page. I'd appreciate a second opinion on whether it is permissable to post up such an amount of information from a single book on Wikipedia and to leave others to render it into an encyclopedia article. I'm not inclined to approach him directly about this after his antics last weekend.--Damac 22:31, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've been hacking around with a navbox template for electricity generation in Ireland, see User:Ali-oops/sandbox. Just looking for comment before it's unleashed upon the world, if it is at all. I'd like to ultimately create pages for the numerous redlinks. Wasn't sure whether to include NI or not but kinda went with the geographical rather than the political. Thoughs, anyone? - Ali-oops 09:21, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good Ali. Maybe make it clear which ones refer to NI though. Ballylumford is one of the major power stations up north, I'll try and do an article for it today. Stu ’Bout ye! 09:33, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Stu ’Bout ye! 11:45, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that! I'll ensure the NI ones are marked (NI). I note also that there's now a Category:Power stations in Northern Ireland, as well as England, Wales and Scotland. In that case, the Irish one should be Category:Power stations in the Republic of Ireland. Look ok? - Ali-oops 17:05, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done now! Thanks, Stu. I've updated the relevant articles. Notice Premier Power in NI is redlinked (hint, hint!) - Ali-oops 14:07, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hint taken! Just a stub for now. Stu ’Bout ye! 11:00, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've being doing some long-overdue edits to Edward Bruce, particularly under the headings "The Invasion of Ireland" and "Arrival and the Campaign of 1315". I began it because the original article was hopelessly wrong in many places, but am now wondering if what I am writing would be better suited as an article in its own right on the Irish Bruce wars? Any and all comments welcome. Fergananim 19:14, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Garda Síochána article is in need of a lot of work. I have talked about this on the talk page with little response. My main gripe with it is the "Allegations against the force". It reads poorly and I feel it makes for an unbalanced article. There is too much space given to it for starters compared with the rest of the details on the force. In fact in all the other Policing articles I struggle to find any thing similar. For the sake of uniformity I would be in favour of removing it/ shortening and rewriting it. Anybody care to discuss it on the talk page? Conor 10:29, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • More a question than a news item, but any suggestions on why Oisín and Ossian retain distinctly separate articles? Am no expert, so am slow to suggest merge, but seems to be a lot of over-lap - is the rationale that the stories of Ossian and Oisín are different in the Irish and Scottish mythology traditions(?) Guliolopez 17:16, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • I think it's reasonable to have two articles, given that "Oisin" concentrates on the character as depicted in the original folk tales whereas "Ossian" concentrates on the character depicted by Macpherson and its controversy and influence. There is a minor overlap since each mentions the other but that is only right and proper. -- Derek Ross | Talk 19:45, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ireland West Airport Knock contains some Christy Moore lyrics. A few days ago an editor changed them. I returned them the way they are written on the offical CM site (link included in article). Editor has re-inserted the changes (no ref given), and referred to me as a "mole of a human scumbag" in the edit history. (interesting, eh?) No response from original note left on user or article talk page. Have left another note on his page (and I was quite nice (for a human scumbag, anyway :) ) but would appreciate if someone else could help watch this article. Regards, MartinRe 00:27, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Have found one link to the second version, so have included that as a variant. Any Christy Moore fans know which was the original? Is it possible the offical site is wrong? MartinRe 13:38, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • Is it possible that the original lyrics were modified (by Moore himself) in light of the conflict? --Mal 19:38, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • As with many songs of this nature, the artist will sing different versions at different live venues and at different events/times. The confusion here appears to stem from the fact that both versions were released for sale (possibly more, I only know the two)- the original 'yankees' on the The Time Has Come album in 1983 and the later version with the 'George Bush' line on the 1994 Live at the Point album. This latter album being more recent and also having happened to have sold extremely well would be the only version that many fans would have heard. jlang 00:59, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A chairde, There really are a depressingly small number of contributors to the wikipedia project in Irish with probably a maximum of 50 or so edits a day, often by the same users. It would be wonderful if you who know so much about Irish affairs and have such interest would (if you speak Irish, of course) help translate articles and create new ones. We have far too many stumpaí, in fact almost half of all articles. A bit of enthusiasm from a few new contributors could really help the project.
I'm sitting my Leaving Certificate now and have found writing for ga.wiki really helped my standard of Irish, I also learned a lot from reading other pages. Your Irish doesn't need to be good to contribute - even if it's only adding categories or interwikis. If you can't remember a word, I recommend EnglishIrishDictionary.com for cross-referencing. Go n-éirí libh, and keep up the good work.

The basic idea behind this is to improve Irish articles to featured article (FA) status. It is medium term in its aims - there is no time frame or any specific topics. An article can be added as long as at least one person is actively working on it with the intention of bringing it to FA status.
