Venusaur (フシギバナ Fushigibana in Japanese) is a fictional character. It is a Stage 2 grass-type Pokémon that evolves from Ivysaur at level 32. Like Ivysaur and Bulbasaur, its basic form, it carries a flower on its back; the blossom is used to collect energy from sunlight, giving off a pleasant fragrance in the process. Due to this, Venusaur usually moves around in an effort to follow the sun; furthermore, it is more powerful in summer when it is able to absorb more sunlight.

In the Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions, Venusaur has the lowest total stats of the three fully evolved forms of the Red/Blue starter Pokémon (Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise)

Name origin

Venusaur's name is likely a combination of "Venus," in reference to the Venus fly-trap, and the Greek sauros, meaning lizard (as in the word "dinosaur"). Its Japanese name, フシギバナ (Fushigibana), is a combination of the words ふしぎ (fushigi, mystery) and はな (hana, flower).

Availability

In Pokémon Red/Blue, Yellow and Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, Venusaur can be obtained by evolving Ivysaur. In Pokémon Sapphire/Ruby, Venusaur is not available at all, but it can be traded from Pokémon Fire Red/Pokémon Leaf Green.

Strengths / weaknesses

Venusaur is vulnerable to Ice, Bug, Fire, Psychic and Flying, and strong against Water, Electric, Grass, and Fighting.

Anime Appearances

In the first season of Pokemon, Ash comes across a secret garden where Bulbasaur evolve into Ivysaur. A Venasaur protects this garden against everything except evolving Bulbasaur and Ivysaur. When Ash's Bulbasaur refuses to evolve, Venusaur uses Vine Whip on it. In Pokémon: Advanced Challenge episode "King of the Forbidden Forest! Venusaur!" a Venusaur guards a forest of Grass Pokémon.
