::::And I will emphasise that flags are certainly not universal across WP, whether or not examples are hard to find. [[WP:MMA/MOS|MMA record tables]] have been strictly without flagicons since 2011, and in [[MOS:BOXING/RECORD|professional boxing record tables]] the WP:NOCONSENSUS result from 2015 was to retain them if they were originally in place, but to refrain from introducing them if they were not. Granted, this list is not a record table, but it is related to professional boxing and very much encompasses the same issue regarding flagicons. Add Floyd Mayweather?

'( why didn't he retire after 1 more fight. a 50 win looks so much better than 49. and then he would be in front of Marciano. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:8A0:6A67:C01:8CEC:C7EB:C86E:AFE6 (talk) 16:39, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of flags?

I would have thought that as soon as you have the word "world" in an article's title, it does become about where in the world the people are from. Just because flags are contentious does not been they should be banned... Thoughts? See List of Formula One World Drivers' Champions or List of world snooker champions or List of alpine skiing world champions or List of World Championships medalists in weightlifting (men) or World Archery Rankings or FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. It's literally the standard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.226.49.228 (talk) 12:51, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This issue has been done to death at boxing articles without result. Including them is most definitely not the standard. In the above articles, athletes explicitly represent nationalities. In professional boxing, one fighter can be German/Armenian/Welsh/Russian/Martian/Neptunian/any flag he happens to feel like. Hence MOS:FLAG#Consistency is not paramount and thereby MOS:SPORTFLAGS. Flags haven't been included in this article since its creation in 2013. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 12:59, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's pretty hard to find a list of champions that doesn't have flags. It's the defining point of almost every person on wikipedia. And do you see the image at the top of this talk page? When you look him up, the lead text is as follows:
"Maximillian Adolph Otto Siegfried "Max" Schmeling was a German boxer who was heavyweight champion of the world between 1930 and 1932. His two fights with Joe Louis in 1936 and 1938 were worldwide cultural events because of their national associations."
I point to WP:NOCONSENSUS (bullet #2), in that something as contentuous as flags should not be introduced to a long-stable article version. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 13:02, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And I will emphasise that flags are certainly not universal across WP, whether or not examples are hard to find. MMA record tables have been strictly without flagicons since 2011, and in professional boxing record tables the WP:NOCONSENSUS result from 2015 was to retain them if they were originally in place, but to refrain from introducing them if they were not. Granted, this list is not a record table, but it is related to professional boxing and very much encompasses the same issue regarding flagicons. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 13:14, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If they play a national anthem then nationality is considered important in the sport. In this case, flags literally add information to the article that was not there before.
