History

S. Anselm's Preparatory School is an independent school in Bakewell, Derbyshire, founded in 1888.[2] S. Anselm's sits in over 20 acres of the Peak National Park, overlooking the market town of Bakewell.

S.Anselm's School was founded by William Storrs Fox in 1888 on its present site. It was named after Anselm, an Italian monk and philosopher who became the Archbishop of Canterbury at the start of the 12th century.

For the first ninety years or so the school was for boys only. Girls joined the school for the first time in 1977. Today the split between boys and girls is roughly equal.

In 1988 the school celebrated its centenary, and more recently, in 2013, its 125 years' anniversary. In this time, the school has grown steadily, and continued to be pioneering in the development of its outstanding facilities. A new library was opened in 2014, in 2016 the school opened its state of the art LEGO Innovation Studio. In 2017 the school opened the Tarbatt Astro, giving it a full-sized all weather multi-use pitch on site.

The school is proud of its 100% pass rate at Common Entrance, and each year, its Year 8 pupils depart for the most prestigious senior schools across the UK, many having won exhibitions and scholarships, as well a growing number who opt to continue their studies locally at S. Anselm's College.

In 2014 the school launched S. Anselm's College in response to demand from parents who were seeking outstanding independent education locally for their children, with the standard teaching, ethics and happy environment that the school is known for.

The school also has a thriving Nursery and Preparatory School, offering Forest School education, that feed the Preparatory School.

Old Anselmians

All former pupils become Old Anselmians. The Old Anselmian's portal, launched in 2017, provides an online space for Old Anselmians to stay in touch with each other, receive news from school and network.
