Howard Spencer

Your DYK blurb says: "that footballer Howard Spencer became the first Aston Villa player to captain England in 1905?" but according our own article (List of England national football team captains) and according to the source you've been using (England Football Online), he actually acted as captain for the first time in 1903... @The Rambling Man: Hi, I used the information from his profile on England Football Online which lists him as captaining England on two occasions in 1905. Rather strangely, the match report for the first 1905 match also lists that match as his first captaincy. Maybe. I added the reference which explicitly states he captained for the first time in 1903. Your call really, just thought you should know since if you're going to use England Football Online as a source, it's currently saying 1903, not 1905 as his debut captaincy. This, from the same source backs up 1903. Perhaps contact the guys running the site, there's clearly an error somewhere in there... The Rambling Man (talk) 15:17, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

@The Rambling Man: I would say to remove it, the year isn't really relevant to the hook anyway. John Lerwill, former Aston Villa club historian, supports him being the first Villa England captain HERE so the actual DYK part of the hook is solid. Kosack (talk) 16:01, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

Sure, I never doubted he was Villa's first captain, but the very first thing I did when reviewing the hook was to check our own aricle on captains, then the historical listings at England Football Online. That's all. If you decide to ditch the year, that's fine, I just wanted you and the promoters to know that I believe there's sufficient, easily found evidence that it was wrong.
