The Bairnsdale Line (also known as the Gippsland line) is a regional passenger rail service operated by V/Line in Victoria, Australia. It serves passengers between state capital Melbourne and the regional cities of Sale and Bairnsdale.

History

The Gippsland Railway from Melbourne was completed as far as Sale in 1879, later being extended to Bairnsdale in 1888 and Orbost in 1916. Since the 1930s passenger services have terminated at Bairnsdale. In 1993 the passenger service was cut back from Bairnsdale to Sale, being reinstated in 2004 under the Linking Victoria program.

Services

The Bairnsdale line is served by three daily return services running Monday to Saturday and two daily return services on Sunday as at March 2013.[1] At Bairnsdale trains connect with coach services to Orbost, Batemans Bay and Canberra. Classified by V/Line as an Intercity service, a snack bar is provided on board trains, and first class accommodation is available. Locomotive hauled N type carriages are used, and all services run semi-express between Melbourne and Moe. In March 2013 the service was suspended east of Traralgon because of safety problems with level crossings.[2][3] Rail services resumed in October 2013.[4]

In August 2018, the Bairnsdale line will serve by the new VLocity fleet.
