History

Around 73,000 years ago, the area was formed as part of the interior of the earlier Fogo Mountain, the eastern half collapsed and with some erosion and lava flow over the centuries, though not as much as in the east and some small volcanoes, it would form the current landscape. From about a kilometer west, it formed the line of where it collapsed, there, not much had collapsed in the area.

Until 1991, along with the northeast portion, it belonged to the municipality that covered all of the island.

A part of the area around the village was burned by two forest fires, a large one in 2004 and a smaller one on April 23, 2011 burning 80 hectares, only 6 % of the forest perimeter.[6]
