Families

The Greens

Jake Green

Jake is a 32-year-old prodigal son who returns to Jericho, Kansas after a mysterious five-year absence, to claim the inheritance left him by his recently deceased grandfather. This increases tension between him and his father (the mayor of Jericho) and Jake decides to leave town, but is caught up in the aftermath of the nuclear explosion, surviving a car accident and rescuing a stranded bus of schoolchildren and their teacher.

Jake proves to be a man of many talents and takes on a leadership role, with the town facing an uncertain future. He clearly has feelings for Emily Sullivan, who appears to be an old flame, but also shows an interest in Heather Lisinski, the teacher he rescued.

Jake Green is portrayed by Skeet Ulrich.

Eric Green

Eric is the deputy mayor of Jericho. He is Jake's older brother, and has a much better relationship with his father. Although he is married to April, he is having a secret affair with Mary Bailey, owner of the town bar.

Eric Green is played by Kenneth Mitchell

Mayor Johnston Green

Johnston is the current mayor of Jericho. He is a popular mayor, but city officials have questioned his leadership skills in the aftermath of the attacks. Mayor Green suffers from a respiratory illness which was at first dismissed as the flu, but has since appeared to be more serious.

Mayor Green is played by Gerald McRaney.

Gail Green

Mayor Green's wife, Gail is a former nurse. Jake has a much closer relationship to his mother than his father and Gail unsuccessfully tries to stop him from leaving town so soon after returning home. Gail appears to know where Jake has been for the five years he was absent from Jericho, but she has not told his father.

Gail Green is played by Pamela Reed.

April Green

April is Eric's wife and a doctor at the medical center. There is much tension in Eric and April's relationship, and she is unaware of her husband's affair with Mary Bailey.

Eric discovers that April had planned to divorce him before the attack, but no longer wants to do so.

April Green is portrayed by Darby Stanchfield.

The Hawkins

Robert Hawkins

Robert Hawkins very recently moved to Jericho with his family. He claims he is a former St. Louis cop, but he is shown to be involved with a mysterious scheme after the attack. The cover story that he rehearsed with his family is that they moved from Memphis, Tennessee to St. Louis after Darcy Hawkins' mother died of Multiple sclerosis.

Robert Hawkins is played by Lennie James.

Darcy Hawkins

Darcy is Hawkins' wife. However, "Darcy" is a cover name protecting her true identity. Their story of having been married for twelve years is another lie, as it is revealed that while Darcy and Robert had a previous relationship, until recently they had been estranged and she was dating a man named Doug. She was living in Washington D.C. with her children before Robert relocated them to Jericho.

Darcy is generally kept in the dark with concern to Robert's clandestine activities, much to her chagrin.

Darcy Hawkins is played by April Parker.

Allison Hawkins

Allison is Hawkins' teenage daughter. However, "Allison" is merely a false name invented by her father in order to protect her identity. She also goes by the nickname "Ally".

In the days after the attacks Allison started to grow a rebellious side in her due to resentment against her father from the predicament the family is in. She began to make friends around town, and also attended Skylar's post-storm party, with her father dissapointed in her attitude by not taking her "role" seriously enough.

Later, after being caught looking at Robert's map and laptop, Hawkins decides to prepare her for the future and she becomes privy to some of her father's activities.

Allison Hawkins is played by Jazz Raycole.

Samuel Hawkins

Samuel is Hawkins' young son. However, "Samuel" is merely a false name invented by his father in order to protect his identity.

Samuel Hawkins is played by Sterling Ardrey.

The Richmonds

Stanley Richmond

Stanley is a farmer who tends his family's farm just outside of Jericho, and is a old friend of Jake Green. It is revealed that their farm is being audited by the IRS. As a fallout-laden storm hits the town, Stanley is caught outside and it is feared he might have received a fatal dose of radiation, but he appears to have suffered no ill effects.

Stanley is portrayed by Brad Beyer.

Bonnie Richmond

Bonnie is Stanley's younger sister and helps him run the farm. She is deaf but can lip read and understand sign language. She is briefly taken hostage by two escaped prisoners posing as sheriff's deputies when Emily brings them, unwittingly, to her farm in search of gas.

Bonnie is played by Shoshannah Stern, who is deaf in real life.

Other characters

Bill and Jimmy

Bill and Jimmy are the last remaining law enforcers in Jericho after the sheriff and the other deputies are killed by escaped convicts. They were locked in a trunk by two convicts who tried to pose as them but Jake comes and frees them. Bill is portrayed as the more naive of the two while while Jimmy is portrayed as more in touch with everything.

Bill is played by Richard Speight Jr. Jimmy is played by Bob Stephenson.

Gray Anderson

Gray is Mayor Green's main rival for the position of mayor. He is suspected to be involved with the death of Heather's friend Scott, who suffered claustrophobia while hiding out in a mine, only to die from an apparent heart attack.

Gray is one of the "four horsemen" sent out to gather news of the world outside of town. He comes back with stories of horror, including the survival of New York City and the destruction of Washington D.C.

Gray Anderson is portrayed by Michael Gaston.

Mary Bailey

Mary owns Bailey's Tavern, the local bar in Jericho. After the attacks it soon becomes host to the out-of-towners trapped in the town because of its satellite dish, a source of the scant information concerning the world outside. Mary is also having an affair with Eric Green, unknown to Green's wife April.

Mary Bailey is played by Clare Carey.

Mitchell Cafferty

Mitchell (sometimes shortened to Mitch) is one of Jake Green's former friends. Years ago he was involved in an armed robbery with Jake and Emily Sullivan's brother Chris. They were ordered to do the robbery by Jonah Prowse.

However, we discover the robbery did not go well: Chris was shot in the head and Mitchell was sent to jail. Because Jake apparently managed to escape the notice of the authorities by fleeing town, Mitchell has grown much resentment against Jake.

Two weeks after the attacks Mitchell reappears in Jericho, causing trouble. He still works for Jonah, now the leader of a band of survivalists.

Mitchell Cafferty is played by Clayne Crawford.

Shep Cale

Shep is a salt miner who is a friend to many of the town's citizens. He confesses to being involved in the death of Heather's friend Scott by not helping him when he had a heart attack.

Later it is discovered that an ailing Victor Miller took Shep's car and drove it back to Jericho, looking for help. Despite Victor's claims that he found it abandoned, Shep is still unaccounted for. He is most likely dead as his farewell message suggested: "tell the family I'm sorry" although this is by no means sure.

Shep Cale is played by Vic Polizos.

Mimi Clark

Mimi is from Washington, DC, in town on behalf of the IRS, which had ordered the Richmond farm to be audited. Because of the attacks, she is stuck in Jericho, left with nothing to do but hang out at the bar.

After the storm breaks, Mimi accidentally dips her hand into a puddle of liquified ash, which Mary Bailey says is "what used to be Denver". Paranoid about potential radiation poisoning, she is reassured by Stanley Richmond that she will be fine. When the hotel she stays at closes after the EMP, she offers to be a farmhand at the Richmond Farm (and cover some of the debt) in exchange for room & board. There appears to be a budding romance between Stanley and Mimi.

Mimi is played by Alicia Coppola.

Gracie Leigh

Gracie owns the local grocery store. She has to deal with the rush of people needing supplies after the attack, and the prospect of her store closing down due to empty shelves.

Gracie is portrayed by Beth Grant.

Heather Lisinski

Heather is an elementary school teacher who was accompanying her class on a field trip at the time the bombs fell, which caused her school bus to crash. Jake rescued her and the students, and she has since assisted him with many of his efforts to help the people of Jericho. It is clear that Heather has a crush on Jake, and that Jake is starting to notice, and return her interest. In episode seven, she gave him an unexpected and passionate kiss.

Heather Lisinski is played by Sprague Grayden.

Victor Miller

A survivor of the Denver attack, Victor was found by Jake trying to break into a pharmacy. He later dies of radiation sickness, but not before we discover that he has a mysterious relationship with Robert Hawkins.

Victor Miller was played by Adam Donshik.

Jonah Prowse

Jonah is the leader of a group of survivalists who are based just outside of the town. He has a number of young men, including Mitchell Cafferty, at his command, and access to weapons and the supplies Dale recovered from the abandoned train.

Jonah is revealed to be Emily's father, and they are estranged over his actions that inadvertantly led to the death of his son and Emily's brother Chris. He also has some history with Jake, and Gray has strong feelings about his trustworthiness.

Jonah Prowse is portrayed by James Remar.

Skylar Stevens

Skylar Stevens is a rich teenage girl who lives in a large house on the edge of town. After Denver is destroyed she fears that her parents, who were in New York City, are dead, too. However, NYC was apparently not destroyed in the attacks. Upon learning this, Skylar is hopeful again, and even hugs Dale.

Initially, Skylar and her friends don't think much of Dale, labeling him a "freak," but she begins to form a bond with him when he brings supplies to her house and reveals that he lost his mother in the attack. She asks him to stay, and they take shelter from a fallout-laden storm at her house. Later, she shows genuine concern when she learns that Dale's trailer home has been destroyed in a fire, leaving him homeless. Still later on, she learns that Dale has been arrested, and makes an attempt to bail him with her (now useless) credit card, but Jake lets him go. Skylar offers to let Dale stay at her house.

Skylar Stevens is played by Candace Bailey.

Emily Sullivan

Emily is a schoolteacher who was driving to Wichita, Kansas to pick up her fiance at the airport when the attack occurred. Later, she becomes the last main character to learn of the nuclear attacks, as she unwittingly escorts two escaped prisoners posing as sheriff's deputies to the Richmond farm in search of gas. Jake rescues her and Bonnie Richmond, and they take shelter from a fallout-laden storm in the farm's storm cellar.

Believing her fiance to be dead, she gains hope after Jake recovers a flight recorder from a crashed airplane, and she learns from the recording that his plane has apparently made a safe emergency landing in a Nebraska field.

Emily and Jake appear to have had a previous romantic relationship, although its precise nature has not yet been revealed in the series.

Emily Sullivan is played by Ashley Scott.

Dale Turner

Dale is a teenager who works at Gracie's Market. Because he lives in a trailer park, he is often teased by the other teens in town. After the attack, he discovers that his mother was killed when a nuclear bomb evidently destroyed Atlanta, Georgia, and he becomes despondent over her loss.

In "Four Horsemen" he discovers an abandoned train loaded with supplies that were never delivered due to the attacks, and hands them over to Gracie. His home is destroyed by a fire in episode five.

Dale Turner is portrayed by Erik Knudsen.

Lisa Whalley

Lisa is Skylar's best friend. However, when Skylar starts being nice to Dale, it makes Lisa mad and critical of Skylar.

She is played by Kristen Rodriguez.
