Dianne Newman is a microbiologist, a professor of biology and geobiology at California Institute of Technology and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.[1] Her research interests include Bioenergetics and cell biology of metabolically diverse, genetically-tractable bacteria. Her work deals with electron-transfer reactions that are part of the metabolism of micro-organisms.[2]
Early life and education
Dianne received her BA from Stanford University in 1993 and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School (1998–2000) and member of the faculty at the California Institute of Technology from 2000 to 2007. She was the Wilson Professor of Geobiology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2007 to 2010, prior to returning to Caltech, where she is currently the Gordon M. Binder/Amgen Professor of Biology and Geobiology in the Divisions of Biology and Biological Engineering and Geological and Planetary Sciences. Newman's scientific articles have appeared in such journals as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Geobiology, Nature, and Science.

Newman received her PhD under Francois Morel at MIT (and then Princeton), and did postdoctoral training under Roberto Kolter at Harvard Medical School.[4]
