John Robinson Leopold (born February 4, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American politician and (as of 2005) was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. Leopold was elected as a Republican for the Anne Arundel County Executive 2006 election.
Leopold has represented Maryland's District 31 from 1983 to 1991 and since 1995. Leopold unsuccessfully challenged Philip C. Jimeno for a Senate Seat in 1990.
Before moving to Maryland, Leopold was a long-time resident of Hawaii. He served in the Hawaii State House of Representatives from 1970 to 1974 and the Hawaii State Senate from 1974 to 1978. Leopold was a losing candidate as the Republican nominee for Governor of Hawaii in 1978.
Leopold also lived in Florida and Missouri prior to moving to Maryland in early 1982. Over the years, Leopold has claimed to be seeking various political offices. He has announced his candidacy for Anne Arundel County Executive in 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002 without ever seeking the office. He has also, at various times, announced his intention to run for Congress, U.S. Senate, and Governor of Maryland without seeking any of the offices.
Leopold has also claimed to be on the short list of choices to be the running mate for Ellen Sauerbrey in 1998 and Bob Ehrlich in 2002, but he was not selected.
