Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (transl. Taarak Mehta's inverted spectacles; sometimes abbreviated as TMKOC) is an Indian Hindi language television sitcom. One of India's longest running television shows, it is produced by Neela Tele Films.[2] The show went on air on 28 July 2008. It airs from Monday to Friday on SAB TV. Reruns of the show started on Sony Pal from 2 November 2015.

The show is based on the column Duniya Ne Undha Chashma written by columnist and journalist/playwright Taarak Mehta for the Gujarati weekly magazine Chitralekha.

Summary

The series takes place at the Gokuldham Co-operative Society, an apartment complex in Powder Gali, Goregaon East, Mumbai around the Gada Family which consists of a successful businessman Jethalal Champaklal Gada, his father Champaklal Jayantilal Gada, his wife Daya and their naughty son Tipendra "Tapu" Gada, who is the leader of his friend circle called "Tapu Sena" (translates to "Tapu's Army" in colliqual Hindi.

The show covers tipical issues which are socially relevant. The residents of Gokuldham faces daily life problems and finds solutions for it but with a moral value too in a hilarious manner. Although Gokuldham Society consists of 17 flats but the show mostly focuses on the lives of the families, that are of; Jethalal Champaklal Gada, a Gujarati; Taarak Mehta, who is from Rajasthan; Aatmaram Tukaram Bhide, who belongs to Marathi culture; Dr. Hansraj Hathi, a Bihari overweight doctor; Krishnan Iyer, a scientist from Chennai but has a Bengali wife; Roshan Singh Sodhi, A Punjabi but has a Parsi wife and Patrakaar Popatlal from Bhopal, a bachelor from eleven years. They always help each-other in their problems, to promote Unity in Diversity.

  • Dilip Joshi as Jethalal Champaklal Gada (2008–present): He is the owner of Gada Electronics. He is from Bhachau Gujarat. He is married to Daya but has crush on Babita, his neighbour.

  • Shailesh Lodha as Taarak Mehta (2008–present): A writer by profession, Taarak is Anjali's husband. He is Jethalal's best friend, who calls him "Fire Brigade" as he helps him through most of his problems.
  • Neha Mehta as Anjali Mehta (2008–present) : Taarak's wife is a dietitian, who always make diet food for him. Taarak however, is fed up of it.

Gokuldham Society

Gokuldham Society is the residential complex where the families of the show are shown to reside. The name "Gokuldham" is the combination of two words: Gokul and dham (dwelling). Often in the show, Gokuldham Society is projected as the most coveted residential building in Mumbai. The area of the plot where the Society is located is about 30,000 ft2. The building features four wings, a club house and a large courtyard. The Society's 2/3 BHK flats are perfect for the Indian way of living. The number of floors in the building is 3. Gokuldham Society is located at a prime location, from where places like market, shopping centre and railway station etc. can be conveniently reached. A temple and a garden are located near the building. In an episode, one of the characters mentions the average price of the Society's flats.[22]

Gada Electronics

Gada Electronics is the shop owned and managed by Jethalal Gada. It is located at Ashok Nagar, Andheri (E) in Mumbai. The shop deals in varied electronic items, ranging from Smart TV to Bridge camera, and multi-features mobile phone to durable mixer grinder. Jethalal has a good reputation in Mumbai's electronic market because of the reliability of his products and favourable views of his customers. Gada Electronics is also the leading bulk supplier of electronic items in Mumbai. Besides the regular sales, Jethalal implements various attractive schemes and offers on his products, mostly during the festivals.

Groups

Tapu Sena

Among the characters of the show are five children, namely Tapu, Goli, Gogi, Pinku and Sonu who form a group called "Tapu Sena". Tapu Sena is headed by Tapu. These five children are often shown playing games and doing sportive mischief. Tapu Sena is a source of annoyance for the other members of the Society, and when rebuked by the elders for their mischief, the children give witty replies. These children, although playful and mischievous, have often done some commendable work including organisation of festivals in the Society and social services, garnering praise from the Society members. Tapu Sena has also helped the Society members deal with the various problems faced by the members. The only female member in Tapu Sena is Sonu, a character that has been successively played by three beautiful actresses, Jheel Mehta, Nidhi Bhanushali and Palak Sidhwani. Being the youngest female member in the Society, Sonu is loved by all, and the rest of the Tapu Sena group like her very much. Sonu is the apple of her parents' eyes, nonetheless, she is a wise girl who knows what is good and bad. The three actresses, Mehta, Bhanushali and Sidhwani have done justice to the role of Sonu.[23]

Mahila Mandal

Gokuldham Society's "Mahila Mandal" is an unofficial body of the Society's resident women: Dayaben Jethalal Gada, Anjali Taarak Mehta, Madhvi Bhide, Babita Iyer, Roshan Kaur Sodhi and Komal Hathi. Although the Mahila Mandal does not take and implement any decision on behalf of Gokuldham Society, it influences the Society's executive body, headed by Atmaram Tukaram Bhide, by putting forward its views and suggestions. Whenever the members of the Mahila Mandal feel the necessity of adopting any decision unanimously, they convene in the flat of one of the Society's residents for a meeting. These six women are beautiful and charming, but often in the show, the character of Babita is portrayed as the most beautiful in Gokuldham Society and an attractive woman. Babita's role is played by Munmun Dutta.

Production and promotion

The shooting happens in film city,Mumbai. In past some parts of the show have also been shot for that times storyline in places such as Gujarat, New Delhi, Goa and in overseas locations such as London, Brussels, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore.[24][25][26][27]

On it completing 1000 episodes on 6 November 2012,[28] Asit Kumarr Modi revealed that it took eight years for him to get this show on air.[29] Further he said, “Originally, it was a column in a Gujarati magazine and I bought its rights in 2001. I approached every channel, but the trend of daily soaps had just started and saas-bahu shows were dominating the scene. Whoever I approached said there was no scope for comedy everyday. But I had a feeling that one day comedies, too, would become a daily trend. Finally in 2008, Taarak Mehta... came on air.”[29]

In February 2015, Joshi, Vakani, and Lodha hosted the red carpet at the 60th Britannia Filmfare Awards to promote the Clean India campaign.[30]

The series has been dubbed in Marathi and is broadcast on 'Fakt Marathi ' TV channel as Gokuldhamchi Duniyadaari.[31]

Reception

In the first week of 2017, the show stood in fourth position with 6,004 TVT ratings. In the fourth week, the show entered the top five and stood in the fifth position with 6,059 TVT ratings. In March 2017, the show remained within the top five shows urban rural metrics. In the 25th week of 2017, the show stood at the top spot with 6,092 TVT ratings. In the 26th week of 2017, the show stood at third spot with 6,049 TVT ratings. It is the longest-running scripted show on Indian television. In the 1st week of 2018, the show topped the chart with 6961 TVT ratings.[32][better source needed] In the 42nd week of 2019 the show stood at first position with 7952 TVT ratings.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Piotr Glinski visited the sets of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah in February 2016.[33]

Crossovers and special episodes

In 2010 the cast of Khichdi made a special appearance to promote their film Khichdi: The Movie.[34]

Special episodes Anand Ka Safar to pay tribute to Rajesh Khanna aired in July 2012 in which the cast members danced on Khanna's songs.[35]

Crossover episodes with C.I.D. named as Mahasangam aired 2014 in which CID visits Gokuldham Society to solve a case.[36]
