Breadtube is a term to describe loose group of online content creators who make content explaining, or giving Editorial opinions from Socialism, Communism, and Anarchism.[1] The term Breadtube comes from Peter Kropotkin's book The Conquest of Bread.[1] The Conquest of Bread is a book explaining how to achieve Anarcho-communism and how an Anarcho-communist society would function.
Prominent breadtubers
- ContraPoints is the largest breadtuber with a subscriber count of ~950k as of 7/2/2020[2]. Her most popular video is on Incels with 3.5 million views as of 7/2/20[3]. Contra's Video essays feature theatrical style costumes and sets, and quotes read by other breadtubers.
- Philosophy Tube has a subscriber count of ~700k as of 7/2/2020[4]. His largest video is a video essay on Anti-fascism explaining the philosophy of violent Anti-fascist action and defending its morality with ~1.5 million views as of 7/2/20[5]. His earlier videos are much cruder compared to his newer work which feature theatrical style costumes and sets, and quotes read by other breadtubers, like Contra's videos. While his older videos feature him in front of a bookshelf as its only location.
- Hbomberguy has a subscriber count of ~600,000 as of 7/2/20[6]. He is most famous for his 57 hour 48 minute stream where he beat the 1999 video game Donkey Kong 64 to support the trans charity Mermaids (charity) after the British National Lottery, who formerly funded the charity withheld funding and put the funding under review after criticism by Irish comedy writer Graham Linehan and others[7]. The livestream featured many notable guests, including U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; whistleblower Chelsea Manning; actress Mara Wilson; journalists Paris Lees and Owen Jones; Adam Ruins Everything creator Adam Conover; author Chuck Tingle; Matt Christman and Virgil Texas of the Chapo Trap House podcast; Donkey Kong 64 composer Grant Kirkhope; game designers Rebecca Heineman, Josh Sawyer, John Romero and Scott Benson; YouTubers and breadtubers Contrapoints, Lindsay Ellis, Philosophy Tube and Jim Sterling; as well as the CEO of Mermaids, Susie Green[8][9][10]. the stream raised 340,000 United States dollars[11] or 265,000 Pound sterling[12]
