Proposed deletion |
Speedy renaming or speedy merging of categories may be requested only if they meet a speedy criterion, for example WP:C2D (consistency with main article's name) or WP:C2C (consistency with established category tree names). Please see instructions below.
- Determine which speedy criterion applies
- Tag category with

- List request along with speedy criteria reason under "Current requests" below on this page
Please note that a speedy request must state which of the narrowly defined criteria strictly applies. Hence, any other non-speedy criteria, even "common sense" or "obvious", may be suitable points but only at a full discussion at WP:Categories for discussion.
Request may take 48 hours to process after listing if there are no objections. This delay allows other users to review the request to ensure that it meets the speedy criteria for speedy renaming or merging, and to raise objections to the proposed change.
Categories that qualify for speedy deletion (per Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion, e.g. "patent nonsense", "recreation") can be tagged with the regular speedy tags, such as reason
with no required delay. Empty categories can be deleted if they remain empty 7 days after tagging with db-empty. Renaming under C2E can also be processed instantly as it is a variation on G7.
Contested speedy requests become stale, and can be un-tagged and de-listed after 7 days of inactivity. Optionally, if the discussion may be useful for future reference, it may be copied to the category talk page, with a section heading and
. If the nominator wants to continue the process, it may be requested regularly at WP:Categories for discussion (CfD) in accordance with its instructions.
Speedy criteria
The category-specific criteria for speedy renaming, or merging are strictly limited to:
C2A: Typographic and spelling fixes
- Correction of spelling errors and capitalization fixes. Differences between British and American spelling (e.g. Harbours → Harbors) are not considered errors; however if the convention of the relevant category tree is to use one form over the other then a rename may be appropriate under C2C. If both spellings exist as otherwise-identical category names, they should be merged.
- Appropriate conversion of hyphens into en dashes or vice versa (e.g. Category:Canada-Russia relations → Category:Canada–Russia relations).
C2B: Consistency with established Wikipedia naming conventions and practices
- Expanding abbreviated country names (e.g. U.S. → United States).
- Disambiguation fixes from an unqualified name (e.g. Category:Washington → Category:Washington (state) or Category:Washington, D.C.).
C2C: Consistency with established category tree names
Bringing a category into line with established naming conventions for that category tree, or into line with the various "x by y", "x of y", or "x in y" categorization conventions specified at Wikipedia:Category names
- This should be used only where there is no room for doubt that the category in question is being used for the standard purpose instead of being a potential subcategory.
- This criterion should be applied only when there is no ambiguity or doubt over the existence of a category naming convention. Such a convention must be well defined and must be overwhelmingly used within the tree. If this is not the case then the category in question must be brought forward to a full Cfd nomination.
- This criterion will not apply in cases where the category tree observes distinctions in local usage (e.g. Category:Transportation in the United States and Category:Transport in the United Kingdom).
C2D: Consistency with main article's name
- Renaming a topic category to match its eponymous page (e.g. Category:The Beatles and The Beatles).
- This applies only if the related page's current name (and by extension, the proposed name for the category) is:
- unambiguous (so it generally does not apply to proposals to remove a disambiguator from the category name, even when the main article is the primary topic of its name, i.e. it does not contain a disambiguator); and
- uncontroversial, either because of longstanding stability at that particular name, or because the page was just moved (i) after a page move discussion resulted in explicit consensus to rename, or (ii) unilaterally to reflect an official renaming which is verified by one or more citations (provided in the nomination). C2D does not apply if there is any ongoing discussion about the name of the page or category, or there has been a recent discussion concerning any of the pages that resulted in a no consensus result, or it is controversial in some other way.
- This criterion may also be used to rename a set category in the same circumstances, where the set is defined by a renamed topic; e.g. players for a sports team, or places in a district.
C2E: Author request
- This criterion applies only if the author of a category requests or agrees to renaming within six months of creating the category.
- The criterion does not apply if other editors have populated or changed the category since it was created. "Other editors" includes bots that populated the category, but excludes an editor working with the author on the renaming.
C2F: One eponymous article
- This criterion applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories, where applicable. Nominations should use

(speedy merger) linking to a suitable parent category, or to another appropriate category (e.g. one that is currently on the article).
Admin instructions
When handling the listings:
- Make sure that the listing meets one of the above criteria.
- With the exception of C2E, make sure that it was both listed and tagged at least 48 hours previously.
- Make sure that there is no opposition to the listing; if there is a discussion, check if the opposing user(s) ended up withdrawing their opposition.
If the listing meets these criteria, simply have the category renamed or merged – follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Administrator instructions, in the section "If the decision is to Rename, Merge, or Delete"; to list it for the bots, use the Speedy moves section.
Applying speedy criteria in full discussions
- A nomination to merge oder rename, brought forward as a full CfD, may be speedily closed if the closing administrator is satisfied that:
- The nomination clearly falls within the scope of one of the criteria listed here, and
- No objections have been made within 48 hours of the initial nomination.
- If both these conditions are satisfied, the closure will be regarded as having been as a result of a speedy nomination. If any objections have been raised then the CfD nomination will remain in place for the usual 7-day discussion period, to be decided in accordance with expressed consensus.
Add requests for speedy renaming and merging here
If the category and desired change do not match one of the criteria mentioned in C2, do not list it here. Instead, list it in the main CFD section.
If you are in any doubt as to whether it qualifies, do not list it here.
Use the following format on a new line at the beginning of the list:
* :Category:old name to :Category:new name – Reason ~~~~
(The four ~ will sign and datestamp the entry automatically.) If the current name should be redirected rather than deleted, use:
*REDIRECT :Category:old name to :Category:new name – Reason ~~~~
Remember to tag the category with:
A request may be completed if it is more than 48 hours old; that is, if the time stamp shown is earlier than 03:17, 14 September 2024 (UTC). Currently, there are 2,091 open requests (. )
Administrators and page movers: Do not use the "Move" tab to move categories listed here! Categories are processed following the 48-hour discussion period and are moved by a bot. |

- Category:Victims of the Inquisition to Category:People executed during the Inquisition - C2C: per all nested categories; removes any ambiguity Ergo Sum 13:35, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose. @Ergo Sum: not all the biogs directly in the category are of people who were executed. I randomly checked just two such articles: Pietro d'Abano and Pierre Clergue. Both men died in prison. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:39, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- Category:Television programs based on radio shows to Category:Television shows based on radio shows – C2C: per convention of Category:Television shows, as set by WP:CFD/2020 May 6#Television_program(me)s. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:57, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

- 33 more "Television program(me)s" to "Television shows" categories — C2C per convention of Category:Television shows, as set by WP:CFD/2020 May 6#Television_program(me)s. I think that this covers all remaining cases. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 09:46, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose the three above. Since we're already fixing these, then these 3 Israeli categories should be changed to follow Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2020 January 22#American television series by network which means "<network> original programming". Also the article are Channel 2 (Israeli TV channel) and Channel 10 (Israeli TV channel). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gonnym (talk • contribs) 10:38, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Gonnym, Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2020 January 22#American television series by network only applied to American series. All the other subcats of Category:Television series by network use other formats. I support for applying the "<network> original programming" format to all countries, but that will need a full discussion. Please can you withdraw the oppose so that these can proceed, without prejudice to any further renamings? I will then open a full CFD for all the subcats of Category:Television series by network. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:30, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- That's like me saying that all your nominations here aren't valid as the original nomination didn't cover them. The only reason I did the US in that batch was because it was the biggest. There is nothing different between these categories, only the country and nothing ENGVAR about it. I'll note that another editor and myself also commented on this in your TV show CfD. --Gonnym (talk) 11:36, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Gonnym, WP:CFD/2020 May 6#Television_program(me)s was an attempt to include as many possible categories while avoiding proper names. I have since gotten better at using Petscan, so if I did the job again the list would be more comprehensive ... but there was no attempt to exclude any type of topic. By contrast, the January 22 CFD was a set wholly from one country. There's nothing wrong with that, but the community may want to take a different view on other countries. I personally think that "<network> original programming" is a good solution globally, and I hope that there won't be any variations, and so I will support renaming them all ... but I don't think it's speediable.
Please note that I am not opposing anything, and I have offered to do the followup work to the Feb CFD ... so please, can we work together to get the outcome we both want? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:16, 5 July 2020 (UTC) - Sure. It just seems a bit disruptive to move and remove. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gonnym (talk • contribs) 12:22, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Gonnym: Doing the moves to "shows" as a first step ensures that even if the full CFD doesn't go the way we want, these are are at least partially fixed. That's why I was hoping that you would withdraw the oppose. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:59, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

- Will have to oppose these two. There is a misconception that because a film studio changed a name, or acquired a different studio, then the category name does not matter. Both of these categories are currently a mess. Hubert's Brain is a film made by WildBrain Entertainment (different WildBrain) and not by DHX Media. Instead, the entries should be categorized under the parent name at the time, while the current name acts as a parent category as it does for Category:DIC Entertainment films and as Category:20th Century Studios films does. --Gonnym (talk) 07:50, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose: Regardless of any perceived, but unstated convention, in Category:Aircraft by manufacturer, naming categories with "...Aircraft aircraft", just reads ridiculously. The existing category title is very clear as to what it encompasses. - Ahunt (talk) 14:41, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Ahunt, the existing title is clearly just the proper name of the company. This isn't a catch-all category for the company; it's category for its products. 8 existing subcats of Category:Aircraft by manufacturer are named "Foo Aircraft aircraft". --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:11, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- Then why not use the full name of the company to avoid this linguistic conundrum Category:Storm Aircraft Group aircraft? - Ahunt (talk) 16:48, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Ahunt: because the article for the company is called Storm Aircraft, and category names follow article names. If you want to propose renaming the article, open a WP:RM ... and if the article is renamed, the category can be speedily renamed to match. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:06, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- To be honest I normally don't spend a lot of time on categories, ever since I did some research on the page hit rates on them and discovered that essentially almost no readers use them at all. I can't see renaming a whole bunch of manufacturer's articles just to make the categories all work out really neatly. My main aim in bringing this up here was to prevent us ending up with essentially ridiculous "aircraft aircraft" cats, but it is the cats that need fixing, not the article names. That said you seem determined to plow ahead regardless, so, as I noted, since the page hits show almost one one reads aircraft cat pages, so this is probably enough time to have spent on it. - Ahunt (talk) 00:55, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Ahunt, similar titles exist wherever a company's name ends with the type of product it creates. So we have lots of categories like this: 52 "Foo Books books" categories, 91 "Film films" categories, 18 "Foo Games games" categories, etc.
I think the real issue here is that you seem to be reading "Foo Aircraft aircraft" as "Foo aircraft aircraft", and not paying enough attention to meaning of the capitalisation.
Anyway, do you want to withdraw your objection? Or do we need to take all these to a full CFD discussion? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:59, 3 July 2020 (UTC)- Actually, I am quite aware that it is the name of the company, in each case, that uses the word "Aircraft" as the last word in its name, plus the noun "aircraft" for its products. I just think it reads poorly and doesn't add to the encyclopedia's credibility to do it that way. It is far too much along the lines of Joseph Heller's Major Major Major Major, which, yes, was satiric and done for humourous effect. As I said though, given that very few readers actually use categories and your commitment to this solution, it isn't worth pursuing further, including not worth a full CFD, which would just duplicate this discussion and outcome, and so simply waste time that could be spend writing articles, so please do go ahead. - Ahunt (talk) 11:54, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

- @Thincat, if that is the case, then there are two options:
- Oppose Not all the programmes in this category are series. Some are one-off. Thincat (talk) 10:19, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- purge this category of show that are not series
- rename all the other subcats of Category:Television series by country and genre to use "shows".
- But I don't see the case for making British programming an exception. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:53, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- There shouldn't be an exception for Britain. However, articles properly categorised as programmes/programs/shows (in any country) shouldn't be improperly re-categorised as series. Another (hypothetical) suggestion: remove Category:British television programmes by genre from Category:Television series by country and genre which is, I think, the source of the problem. I now see Category:Television shows is (temporarily?) chaotic. Thincat (talk) 11:13, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

- Fayenatic: It's set up as a WP:TOPICCAT for the organisation called Razakar (Pakistan). If it was a set category, it would have people categories as patents. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:55, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
- Ah, I see – thank you. But I disagree that the organisation was called Razakar (Pakistan), even though that is its main article; in the article, the organisation is referred to either as "Razakars" or as "Razakar force". Moreover, I think the category is already functioning also as a set category. (I would probably move the article as well.) – Fayenatic London 13:00, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Fayenatic, I have moved this to the opposed section, because I think it has moved beyond the type of straightforward issue which can be handled as a speedy, so we need a full discussion to consider it. I'll leave it you make that full nomination, so that you can make the nominator's case upfront. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 07:46, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

- Justin: as Suspense (genre) redirects to Thriller (genre), doesn't this justify a speedy upmerge to Category:Thrillers, and renaming/merging of its subcats? I'm not sure that that would be best, though. The article Thriller (genre) only mentions suspense as a characteristic of thrillers, not as a sub-genre. However, I feel that Suspense#In drama might be a better target for the redirect. If that is done then I would not oppose your nomination. – Fayenatic London 22:22, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

- I'm sorry but I don't see how exactly this is a valid oppose. This is exactly what C2D means. If the name isn't good, it should be handled at the article level and not at the category levels. CFD should not make WP:LOCALCONSENSUS a thing. --Gonnym (talk) 22:51, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Place Clichy: are you planning to move these categories to full CFD in order to have them merged? (because if you are not, there seems to be little reason to further delay renaming) Marcocapelle (talk) 05:37, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- C2D allows for exceptions, and requires anyway that the target is both unambiguous and uncontroversial, neither of which are met here. Anyway, the real issue here is that what is called All-Palestinian Protectorate in the eponymous article never actually had any existence (beside its first 3 months in 1948 according to the author of most of these categories, as argued here) and that this content should probably better be located elsewhere than in what looks like a country category structure. Notably, all the chronology and (dis)establishment categories would probably better be served by referring to an expression like Egyptian rule in the Gaza Strip, or sticking to a purely geographical terminology such as Palestinian territories or Gaza Strip. They may also be purely deleted or upmerged to larger parents. Note that all these categories have actually very few articles in them. Besides the articles directly related to the Egyptian short-lived straw government (All-Palestine National Council, All-Palestine Government) and wider articles relative to the Arab-Israeli conflict and Israeli military operations, all you have is two localities (Kfar Darom and Bureij), a newspaper (Gaza Weekly Newspaper) and a football club (Shabab Rafah). This is very little content for 31 chronology and establishment categories. For the time being and until someone creates a CfD for them, a name that mentions (Gaza) is more useful to the reader than a name that does not include it, for most or all of these categories. Place Clichy (talk) 15:53, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose this tree. It seems last year an editor changed some of these from episodes to programs and I can't find a discussion relevant to that. Since we have a parent tree for "Television episodes by" these should be changed to represent what these exactly are. As an example Category:Television programs directed by Paul Feig has only episodes. --Gonnym (talk) 10:32, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Gonnym, that sounds plausible in principle, and I AGF that it's right, but I haven't checked it myself.
However, when I look at Category:Television programs by director, I see that it is a subcat of Category:Television shows, not of Category:Television episodes. That parenting could be easily fixed, but it occurs to me that there must be a non-trivial set of cases where one person has directed a whole series ... it might be best to use a more inclusive title such as Category:Television programming by director, as a subcat of Category:Television programming.
So, if it would help: how about I open a full CFD discussion on this set, offering three options: shows, episodes, programming. I have tools to make such group noms easily, so it's no biggie for me to do it. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:46, 5 July 2020 (UTC)- Sure, a CfD is probably best here. Note that if such an RM is opened, I will oppose the renaming: I see no benefit to editors or readers in creating avoidable ambiguity in a scientific term, and many downsides. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 03:37, 24 June 2020 (UTC)- I still strongly oppose the way in which this is being steamrollered through. It's not for me to propose an RM; I don't want a move. You want a move, so you should open an RM and notify members of the relevant Wikiprojects. Peter coxhead (talk) 07:27, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Peter coxhead, per WP:C2D the category name should match the article name, so unless the article Alsophila (plant) is renamed, this category should be disambiguated. Feel free to open an RM discussions f you see fit. If an RM discussion is opened, then this speedy will be placed on hold pending its outcome, but otherwise it is a valid renaming which should proceed.
- Oppose. There's no article at Alsophila: both the fern and the moth are disambiguated. More sensible would be to choose one of the two taxa as the main topic and fix the categories accordingly. The images and top articles in a Google search for "Alsophila" are all for the fern, so this should be made the main topic. Peter coxhead (talk) 07:55, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Peter coxhead, plesae drop the hyperbole. There is no
steamroller
, just a normal, long-established process for applying a long-established naming convention. If you don't want the category to be renamed, then you have three possible remedies:- propose an RM to rename the article, so that it matches the current category title.
- open an RFC to propose changing or removing WP:C2D.
- After the renaming, open a full CFD discussion to propose moving it back, in breach of the convention. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 08:12, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

- Objection: we normally categorize journalists by nationality, not by broader transnational region, and then we group the national categories in continent-level container categories. All of the journalists are already categorized by specific country, and the country categories are already parented by an Category:African journalists category — which means this category is simply unnecessary and out of line with how journalists are normally categorized, and should thus just be deleted rather than renamed. - Bearcat Then nominate it for deletion, but I don't see why that should stop from de-capitalising the last two words in the category's name. Armbrust The Homunculus 18:53, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
- Because it can't be nominated for deletion concurrently with being listed for speedy renaming. It has to either be listed for deletion instead of renaming, or just needlessly waste time and effort by being renamed and then immediately listed for deletion. Bearcat (talk) 19:47, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose, "archeological site" implies that archeology has been or could be conducted on them, which is untrue if the site is still standing, or is only known from written sources and has never been found. Abductive (reasoning) 21:01, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose this batch. @1234qwer1234qwer4: There was consensus at this discussion among others that these Booian Fooian categories should instead be moved to Category:Booian Fooian society, and there is also long-standing consensus that people categories should be at Category:Fooian people of Booian descent. This structure would make things a lot clearer, as I agree that these categories are currently very poorly named. Ready for deletion
Check Category:Empty categories awaiting deletion for out of process deletions. In some cases, these will need to be nominated for discussion and the editor who emptied the category informed that they should follow the WP:CFD process.
Once the renaming has been completed, copy and paste the listing to the Ready for deletion section of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Manual.
