A large castle that originated as a tower house dating back to the 15th Century stands to the west of the village. Originally owned by the Barry family, the Frekes occupied the building by 1617. The family, along with the intermarried Evans family became the [[Baron Carbery|Barons of Carbery]]. Castlefreke is a village and townland in County Cork, Ireland. It is located on the R598 regional road, to the east of Rosscarbery.[1][2]

Castlefreke takes its name from a large castle that originated as a tower house dating back to the 15th century. This building, Castle Freke, was originally owned by the Barry family and was occupied by the Freke family from 1617 onwards. The Freke family, along with the intermarried Evans family, became the Barons of Carbery. The castle was rebuilt by John Evans-Freke, 6th Baron Carbery in 1780, using the original design.[3][4]
