Shahid Buttar is a British-born American attorney, activist, and political candidate who was a candidate for the California's 12th congressional district in the 2020 primary against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Buttar was previously a candidate for the same seat in 2018, placing third behind Pelosi and Republican candidate Lisa Remmer.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Early life and education

The son of Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Buttar was born in London, England, and grew up in the Midwestern United States. Buttar briefly attended the University of Chicago, but was forced to drop out after his family experienced a foreclosure.[7] He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola University Chicago and a Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School in 2003.[8]

2020 House election

Buttar ran for the House of Representatives in California's 12th congressional district in 2020. Buttar is the first Democrat to run against incumbent Nancy Pelosi during her career.[11][12][13][14][15] His campaign was endorsed by former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel and motivational speaker Marianne Williamson.

Buttar was accused of sexual harassment by Elizabeth Croydon in July 2020. Buttar denied those claims, with The Intercept determining that Croydon's allegations could not be corroborated. Several organizations, including The League of Pissed Off Voters in San Francisco and the local chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, revoked their endorsements of his candidacy.[16][17]

In the November general election, Buttar was defeated by Nancy Pelosi.[18]
