2021 tennis event results
Iga Świątek is the defending champion.[ 1]
Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka were in contention for the WTA No. 1 singles ranking at the beginning of the tournament. Barty retained the top ranking after Osaka withdrew from the second round.
Serena Williams will attempt to win a record equaling 24th Grand Slam title and a Quadruple Career Grand Slam .
Osaka declined to attend the mandatory post-match press conferences, citing mental health concerns. In response, the four Grand Slam tournaments issued a joint statement threatening fines and future suspensions from tournament play if Osaka did not attend the conferences. Following her first-round victory and a $15,000 fine, Osaka withdrew from the tournament.[ 2]
