Andoni Island is regarded as the most endemic island in Nigeria. Located at eastern fringe of the oil - rich Niger Delta in Rivers State, it is a barrier island that geographical shaped by nature in the likeness of a shark. The Island measuring about 124 square kilometres (48 sq mi) is known for housing the endangered African forest elephants (Loxodonta African cyclotis), pygmy hippopotamus and many other mammals. The Island is also a nesting ground for different species of sea turtles.
