Need help to delete two redirects

{{admin help}}

I just userfied Mulan (upcoming film), which I created, to User:Face/Mulan. Apart from the redirect which that move creates, there is also Mulan (2011 film), the original title of the article. I request that an admin removes the two redirects. Cheers, theFace 13:04, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been moved back by Pengyanan (talk) - discuss with him. If you are in this situation again, you can tag the redirects with {{db-r2}} (redirect from mainspace to user space) or {{db-r3}} (recently created, implausible redirect) as appropriate. JohnCD (talk) 14:31, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
*sigh*, fine. I've created an AfD, in which I explained my actions. - theFace 15:01, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The AfD is closed. Article is now at User:Face/Mulan (upcoming film). - theFace 20:56, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia talk:Copyrights archive

Hi, the reason that the bot did not archive this topic is that it is set to archive discussions that have been quiet for >30 days ("algo = old(30d)"). The most recent comment in that topic is from 18 April 2013, only 22 days ago. It's really premature to archive it. TJRC (talk) 20:50, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks for pointing that out. But I don't think it was premature to archive. It is true that the last comment was on April 18, but that was me thanking an admin, who fulfilled my edit request and closed the discussion. By then, the topic had been stale for some time, with the last meaningful comment being on April 5. Cheers, theFace 13:27, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Speaking of archiving... you may want to archive your talk page a bit. It's really huge! My browser almost chokes on it, lol. All the best, theFace 13:32, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Premature only in the sense of "before the automation would have done it." Yeah,, I plan to archive one of these days; I want to clean out some bot messages first in my Copious Spare Time. FWIW, though, the best way to add a new topic on a talk page is usually to use the "New section" tab; it will create a new section at the bottom of the talk page, without loading the entire page. Orphaned non-free media (File:C plus plus book.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:C plus plus book.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:15, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your kind welcome, the links to my other welcomes, and of course the "kitten" Worldbook1967 (talk) 06:51, 24 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! You appeared on my watchlist after you edited Kinderen voor Kinderen. I must note, however, that your edit wasn't entirely correct. Santa Claus/Christmas is a similar, but different feast than Sinterklaas. Over here in the Niederlande, we celebrate both feasts, in the same month! (December) Judging from your other edits, you do not seem to be Dutch? I wonder how you heard of Kinderen voor Kinderen and the song? Cheers, theFace 19:35, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm from the U.S.A. I understand that Sinterklaas and Santa Claus are two different fictional characters associated with different holidays, but that both are based on Saint Nicholas of Myra, who lived in the 3rd century. It seems that Santa Claus was modeled after Sinterklaas, and Sinterklaas, in turn, was modeled after St. Nicholas. We have many other names for our Santa Claus, including "Saint Nick". My dilemma was producing a translation for the song title that all English speakers could understand. I took the lazy approach and ran it through Google Translate. I suppose "Sinterklaas wants to dance" would be most accurate. I just happened to see a video on YouTube called "Pi Pa Pepernoot", and saw the children in school dancing to this song. I searched for more videos, and discovered many other schools were also teaching this same song and dance to their students, so I deemed the song notable. Once something interests me, I become a bit obsessed with gathering information on the subject, and sometimes go on a tangent onto other loosely related subjects. (I have even gathered the information to make pepernoot, which I will do in December). I try to have diverse interests, and it probably shows in my edits. I now wish I had registered years ago. Worldbook1967 (talk) 06:39, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that sounds logical. I hope you'll enjoy your time here. Thanks for your edits to the neglected but well-accessed specialty pages! I've been thinking of some ways to improve them, such as organization and sourcing, but have had any ideas. Would be interested in collaborating on these popular pages if you're willing, particularly if you have any ideas about how they could be systematically improved; at any rate, thanks for giving them some attention. No problem. Just finished with adding the caption parameters everywhere. That's about the only contribution I can make to the area. I know a bit about coding and templates, but I know nothing about medicine. I can't help you with that. Cheers, Manifestation 14:38, 7 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Identity disorder, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Identity problem. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

My revert at the Cuegloss

Hey Manifestation. I just wanted to elaborate a bit on my revert. Since the term scratch is already the name of the entry, the link you placed at the DAB page works without any anchor being needed. You will see this is true because the link at the DAB page still works, despite my revert. Anchors are for when the entry has a different name than what you are trying to link to through a section link. By the way, for entries in that glossary, you can also use the template {{cuegloss}} with this markup {{cuegloss|name of any defined term or anchored term}} and you can also pipe to any entry but display a different word. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:47, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Mozilla boxing.gif

Thank you for uploading File:Mozilla boxing.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Your AIV report

I have blocked the IP you reported for disruptive editing at Tham Luang cave rescue. However, the edits were (in my opinion) good faith and the block is for violating the three revert rule, not for vandalism; hence 24 hours for a "standard first offence" and with the possibility of a successful appeal before then. Additionally, this edit summary, falsely accusing another editor of vandalism and insulting them in an article's edit summary, is a mild personal attack and should not be made again. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:38, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have not falsely accused anyone. The user in question was clearly not acting in good faith. He or she was mean-spirited, POV-pushing, and had no interest in being neutral. That becomes obvious when you see what they wrote: [1], [2], [3], [4]. – Manifestation (talk) 11:55, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So the guy thinks the coach was foolhardy to put the boys in danger in the first place, and when challenged backed it up with a source. That seems a legitimate opinion to hold; and the escalating temper is probably due to him having a strong opinion and other people reverting him out of hand. Still worth assuming good faith, I feel. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:16, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever. I've written something about the criticism directed at the coach. Hopefully that will satisfy everyone, including the anon. Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 13:20, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The following articles are about people who are not notable and might be deleted. They had smaller roles than Saman Kunan, who you believe should not have an article. If these have AFD, I would probably vote "merge" and delete.

Original research at sleeper hit

Your recent edits to the article were undone. Please cite sources directly connecting the content to the topic of the article, i.e. "sleeper hit". None of your sources mention the phrase, which should be a requirement for sticking to sources on the topic and avoiding original research. Your revision to the lead also strayed from the source cited. Dan56 (talk) 01:01, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Dan56: Jesus christ, are you kidding me? Do you have any idea how long it took me to collect all those different refs? Compulsive people like you make editing Wikipedia stressful. It took me several hours to write/code such a paragraph, but it takes you one click to remove it. I hope you feel proud of yourself. - Manifestation (talk) 11:39, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
According to this encyclopedia's standards, your additions did not improve the article, while my removal did. I am not proud of myself; this was simply routine and impersonal. I am sorry for the inconvenience. Dan56 (talk) 12:10, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
On the other hand, I have found a reliable source to help verify the addition of Pokemon Red and Blue into the article: "Top 10 Sleeper Hit Games List", by Honey's Anime. Dan56 (talk) 12:11, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Dan56: I don't wanna use that article! It's poorly written and makes several incorrect statements:
  • It states that the game had a 9-year development cycle. It was actually 5 (1990-1995);
  • It says it launched at 100,000 units. It was actually 200,000 units (see this and this link);
  • It says the game was "pretty glitchy to boot", and that it "was so bad, that some players were encountering a completely unknown Pokémon". That is a reference to the Mew glitch, a rather difficult to execute glitch which allows you to catch Mew. It is impossible to do this by accident. I have played Pokémon Red for a very, very long time, and the game is not glitchy;
  • It says that Mew "was never intended to be in the game". The author misunderstood what was actually said in the Iwata Asks interview (link). It was never intended to appear in the game by normal means. But due to the Mew glitch, people could still get it;
  • It seems to say that the pair of games became sleeper hits all because of the sensational rumors surrounding Mew. That's of course nonsense. There were many other factors involved. The most important? How about: the games were really good?
Nice "reliable source", huh? Not the type of reference you would want to copy verbatim. - Manifestation (talk) 16:51, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I had found it to do you the favor of justifying your content's inclusion. Do you have an alternative that says this game was a "sleeper hit"? Dan56 (talk) 18:26, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Alternately, we can revise "9-year" as "several years". As far as the Mew reference, according to what is verified in the Wikipedia article on the game, Tajiri corroborates the word-of-mouth surrounding the Mew character, saying it "created a lot of rumors and myths about the game" and "kept the interest alive". Dan56 (talk) 18:30, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To your point of questionable reliability, you cited a Nintendo press release in your content addition; press releases are questionable, as they are self-published and may represent a conflict of interest, not being a third-party from the topic. Dan56 (talk) 18:32, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Dan56:
"Do you have an alternative that says this game was a "sleeper hit"?"
Let's see... how about using common sense? Sorry that I couldn't find a newspaper article saying that the games were sleeper hits. No one thought of using the term.
"press releases are questionable, as they are self-published and may represent a conflict of interest"
The only thing questionable is your amazingly strict interpretation of the rules. - Manifestation (talk) 19:15, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The only other thing I could find is this page from a book, but I don't think it's very reliable... - Manifestation (talk) 19:17, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Rough Guides is a respectable source. Why not? Dan56 (talk) 09:22, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Dan56: Well ok, maybe it is reliable, but the info about Pokémon takes up less than 1,5 page. The book is a compendium of info on a large variety of game-related subjects. It's a tertiary source which happens to call the game a sleeper hit, but that can also be deduced from all the other info about the game. - Manifestation (talk) 21:41, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Here is another source. Pokémon anime producer Takemoto Mori called the game "a sleeper" in an issue of Animerica (direct link to picture):

Animerica: Did the decision to make the animated series come before the release or after?
Mori: After. As a game, Pokémon's sales were very unusual. I mean it was a Game Boy game. It still is. [LAUGHS] You see, in Japan when you have a game for the Nintendo 64 or the PlayStation, it sells like crazy right from the start, just like Final Fantasy did. The companies work very hard to rush it to the shelves, the kids are so excited they can't wait for it, the distributor takes orders, and the orders are in the hundreds of thousands - and then they all sell out. Well, that's not how it was with Pokémon. Pokémon was more of a sleeper.
Animerica: Meaning there weren't any orders?
Mori: Right. Or rather, you wouldn't say that it had no popularity; it just sold gradually. It would sell only several tens of thousands a month until it had sold tens of millions of copies.

What Mori likely tries to say with "I mean it was a Game Boy game" is that no one thought that a Game Boy game released in 1996 would be such a hit, since the Game Boy was considered yesterday's news by 1996.

It should be taken into account that the game was likely done in Japanese and translated to English, however. Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 21:42, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The subject of the article you edited is sleeper hit, not Pokemon. And the section you were editing was "Video games". So I would say the Rough Guide is more appropriate and the best source on the (article) topic. I don't see what difference it makes that it is a tertiary source; Wikipedia's position on tertiary sources is that they are helpful for broad summaries (which a "video games" subsection would be) and determining due weight (which is needed to prevent the section from being consumed by needless detail about one example). Dan56 (talk) 21:49, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Dan56: Ok, I've added the book as a ref. What do you think about the interview? Should I add it too? Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 17:29, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe condense the information in the interview into one sentence; the last quote about the gradual sales rate sounds the most relevant to include for a section on video game sleeper hits. Dan56 (talk) 17:54, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Dan56: Mr. Mori said that the games had a slow start, and then gradually became more popular, until it sold millions. That is already in the paragraph, which is already pretty long as it is. I don't think it needs to be expanded further. I could add the Mori interview right after the newly added Rough Guides source, following the sentence "They followed several years of development and became sleeper hits". Then it will be reference no. 25. Would you agree? Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 18:35, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited N.E.D., you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page KWG (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Speedy deletion nomination of List of ICD-9 codes 320–389: diseases of the nervous system and sense organs

Hello Manifestation,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged List of ICD-9 codes 320–389: diseases of the nervous system and sense organs for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source, probably infringing copyright.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

This is total nonsense. Everything you see on that page is accessible for free on the internet. The ICD-system is offered free of charge by the World Health Organisation. If my page is to be speedy-deleted, then so are all other ICD lists on Wikipedia. - Manifestation (talk) 13:51, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That is simply not how copyright works. Lists are not subject to copyright however the text you added in the lead is. Available for free reading on the internet doesn't mean free of copyright. As such, I've removed the text and requested a revision deletion. Praxidicae (talk) 14:04, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Praxidicae and SportingFlyer: Are you kidding me? There are many ICD-list-pages on Wikipedia; see here for ICD-9, and here for ICD-10. The only difference between those page and the page you tagged is the amount of detail. I copy-pasted all details, for every disease on that list. I didn't believe this would form a problem, because it is the 9th version of the ICD. As in, the old version. Humanity is at version 10 now, and the medical world is currently preparing for the ICD-11, which is expected to come into effect on 1 January 2022. The ICD-9 is an obsolete system. It is important that the information in it is retained for historical reasons.
I see that you have deleted the intro. Bizarre, because that is the one thing that was not copy-pasted.
Where can I object this?? - Manifestation (talk) 14:50, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Manifestation: "Accessible for free" is not the same as "having the rights to reproduce." I found this in new pages patrol, the list was entirely attributable to a single book which had a copyright of 1977 and a very clear notice reproduction was not allowed without prior consent. Furthermore, this article (these articles? Found this out of context and haven't looked at the other ones) simply copy the book verbatim, see WP:NOFULLTEXT, so even if the copyright doesn't turn out to be an issue, there's still a problem with the article as a whole. SportingFlyer T·C 15:44, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I thought Praxidicae had retired .... anyway, I've done the revision deletion as requested. For an explanation of copyright, see User:Ritchie333/Plain and simple guide to copyvios. Specifically, the Copyright notice on the WHO site says "Extracts of the information in the web site may be reviewed, reproduced or translated for research or private study but not for sale or for use in conjunction with commercial purposes." and it's the last bit that's a problem. You're not the first person to be confused over Wikipedia's definition of copyright being out of step with the real world's, and you won't be the last. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:02, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Ritchie333, SportingFlyer, and Praxidicae: Yes, you're right, Ritchie333. It's 2019, and Wikipedia's 20st century definition of copyright is out of the step with the rest of the internet, all in the name of being a free content encyclopedia. Nobody, not one person at the WHO, would mind that Wikipedia has a full copy of the ICD-9 in their files, integrated within its ecosystem of medical articles. On the contrary, I'm sure they would like it. Maybe some stuck-up lawyer of theirs would object to it, well... Sometimes you just need to let things go, even if those things are copyrighted.
@Ritchie333: You revision deleted the intro, but that intro was the one thing I did *not* copy-paste. That, I wrote myself. The problem is the listing of diseases. As I pointed out above, there are many ICD-lists on Wikipedia (here and here). But my list was way more detailed. I copy-pasted everything into it. So, are you guys saying that the list should be less detailed, trimmed down, so that it would qualify for fair use? Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 18:06, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Ritchie333: Could you take another look at the article now? I gave it a thorough strip-down, hopefully making it good enough for fair use. The list is also much worse now, and I deleted hours of hard work. Great. :-( Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 18:45, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I can't see immediate issues there. I scrubbed the bit that Praxidicae claimed was violating copyright, perhaps they can confirm I was doing it correctly? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:49, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The intro was not violating copyright. Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 18:52, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I've put the intro back as I can't see any WHO page it was copied from. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:55, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't copied from any page. I wrote it myself. Thank you for restoring it! Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 15:12, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Ritchie333: @Manifestation: The issue with the article isn't the intro but rather the list appeared to have been copied directly from a book with a clear copyright and distribution restriction. I know we might trip over ourselves because it's a "list," but at the very least the arrangement here would be copyrightable, and possibly the selection as well. SportingFlyer T·C 16:39, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@SportingFlyer, Ritchie333, and Praxidicae: I have shortened the list significantly so that it only contains the names of the 3-digit (e.g. 320) and 4-digit (e.g. 320.4) categories. Take this part for instance:

The above part is now this:

As you can see, the specifications of diseases have been removed; therefore the list is no longer a verbatim copy. It is now simply a list of ICD-codes and diseases, ordered by ICD-code. In my opinion, this qualifies as fair use, for the purpose of education. What do you think? - Manifestation (talk) 19:55, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Rosguill: Thank *you* for reviewing all those redirects! :-) It's a tedious job I can imagine, but it's a good thing someone is doing it. The redirects are a part of Wikipedia that needs to be patrolled.
As for my own redirects: I created them while doing a clean-up job of the ICD-9 chapters. I was a bit shy about doing it, because I have no background in medicine. But there were so many red links, I just had to clean it up. A mammoth task. For one, I made sure I only created redirects which I was absolutely sure of. And I'm still not done with those pages! I wish my days had more hours. :-( Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 19:13, 8 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to [email protected], so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at [email protected].

Vielen Dank!

@Amkgp: Is this a joke? - Manifestation (talk) 19:24, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Manifestation: I can find the article has been very well linked but it has no references. I hope you can differentiate between links and references in Wikipedia. See Help:External links and references. Amkgp (talk) 19:30, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Amkgp: Are you kidding me? The article is called "ICD-11 MMS Chapter 1". So obviously, it is the first chapter of the ICD-11 MMS, meaning that the ICD-11 MMS *is* the source. Compare this to the plot summary of a movie. You don't need to cite a source when you write the plot summary of a movie, because the movie *is* the source. You can view the first chapter of the ICD-11 here. Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 19:49, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It might help to point out that in 2005 a nearly identical list was created for ICD-10: ICD-10 Chapter I: Certain infectious and parasitic diseases.
And remember that kindness, giving other editors the benefit of the doubt, and seeking first to understand, go a long way to creating a productive, supportive, and engaged community.
It's also in the ICD-9, see here: List of ICD-9 codes 001–139: infectious and parasitic diseases. Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 21:16, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Assigned sex

why the revert? my thinking was that biological sex is not "assigned" to one in any sense, so "biologically assigned sex" doesn't really mean anything. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 黄雨伞 (talkcontribs) 00:58, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 黄雨伞. Assigned sex is actually a commonly used phrase. See, for example, Gender identity. Still, you do have a point. Your suggestion of "biological sex" sounds hollow to me, because basically, everything within an organism is biological, including transgenderism. However, that also means the current wording is poor too. So how about this:
"a discrepancy between someone's physical, assigned sex and the sex they perceive to have."
This would still be dubious, because in case of a male-to-female transgender, you could arguably say that femininity is her 'true' sex, the gender that was *really* assigned to her at birth, but incorrectly expressed initially. Therefore, we could also ditch the "assigned sex" phrase all together:
"a discrepancy between someone's physical sex and the sex they perceive to have."
What do you think? Cheers, Manifestation (talk) 13:15, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Manifestation, great, that sounds really good to me! --黄雨伞 (talk) 13:25, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I've opted for the term "assigned physical sex". You can see my edit here. I've read Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Gender identity, but it doesn't give any advice about the phrase "assigned sex", so I've made a thread about it: Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Gender identity#Assigned sex.
