Marvel Studios Animation[1] is a division of American production company Marvel Studios centered on development of its animated projects based on Marvel Comics.[2] The division was created by Marvel Studios and mainly produces projects set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).[3] The division also oversees development on non-MCU animated projects.

History

In March 2019, Marvel Studios was reported to be developing the series What If...?, which explores alternate realities within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as its first animated series.[4] The series was confirmed during the San Diego Comic-Con 2019.[5] While working on What If...?, the studio realized animation allowed more creative freedom than live-action, inspiring the studio to create a division focused on animated projects,[6] which would be used to explore the greater multiverse within the MCU and develop new takes on established characters.[7]

In July 2021, during an interview leading up to the release of What If...?, Marvel Studios executive Victoria Alonso revealed the studio was creating its own animation division.[3] By the following month, the studio was creating an infrastructure to develop animated series under the Marvel Studios banner, hiring 300 positions to work on animated projects,[8][9] while Brad Winderbaum was promoted to Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at the studio.[10] Alonso was promoted to President of Physical, Post Production, VFX and Animation in September 2021.[11]

In November 2021, three series were announced to be in development on Disney+ Day: Marvel Zombies; Spider-Man: Freshman Year; I Am Groot; and X-Men '97, the first Marvel Studios project based on the X-Men and a revival of the 1990s X-Men series.[12] By April 2022, Marvel Studios was announced to be taking over production for the Disney Junior preschool series Marvel's Spidey and His Amazing Friends starting with its second season; the series' first season was released under the Marvel Entertainment umbrella.[13] In September 2022, Brian Kesinger revealed he was directing an animated MCU series for the studio.[14] By January 2023, the division was being referred to as "Marvel Studios Animation".[1]

Process

Similar to other animation studios, Marvel Studios Animation outsources its animation to other studios;[6] Victoria Alonso said this would allow the studio to find more creative partners around the world.[15] Througth most of its animation is outsourced to third-party studios, Brad Winderbaum noted the studio is open to work alongside fellow Disney studios Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios "under the right circunstances".[6]

According to Marvel Studios' head of visual development Ryan Meinerding, Marvel Studios Animation uses techniques similar to those used in comics, which allows the studio adapt Marvel comics "in a way that's maybe more powerful than the films".[16] Winderbaum said the type of animation used in a series would depend on what the producers felt was more fit for each series.[17]

Unlike VFX artists for the live-action productions, artists at the animation studio work in-house at Marvel Studios Animation. The studio works under a strict deadline structure, which was criticized by a senior animator as the studio "asking for things that can’t be done".[1]
