Star Wars Outlaws[4] is an upcoming open world video game developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft under license by Lucasfilm Games. The game will be set in the Star Wars universe, during the period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.[5]
Premise
Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi,[5] players take control of outlaw scoundrel Kay Vess (portrayed by Humberly González)[6] and her companion Nix (portrayed by Dee Bradley Baker)[6] as they "attempt one of the biggest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen."[7]
Gameplay
Outlaws is a single-player, third person open world video game set in the Star Wars universe.[5] The game will feature stealth and open combat, vehicle combat, space combat, and branching dialogue.[8]
Development
On 13 January 2021, Ubisoft announced that a Star Wars game was in development by Massive Entertainment and under license by Lucasfilm Games. The game will have a focus on its story and open-world.[9] Massive Entertainment began recruiting additional members to their development team, in part due to developing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora alongside it.[10]
A cinematic trailer was revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023.[4] The following day, ten minutes of gameplay footage was revealed at the Ubisoft Forward showcase.[8]
In an interview with IGN, Massive Entertainment's creative director Julian Gerighty said that the time period between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi was selected because his colleagues "are all huge fans of the original trilogy".[5] He also said that the setting created an ideal environment for an "established or rookie scoundrel to cut their teeth" as it created a moment where the Rebel Alliance are not "part of the picture", the Galactic Empire is "taking more and more control", and the criminal syndicates are "taking more power".[5]
