2018 (also known as 2018: Everyone is a Hero) is a 2023 Indian Malayalam-language survival thriller film about the severe 2018 Kerala floods that devastated Kerala.[3][4] It is directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, who wrote the screenplay with Akhil P. Dharmajan, and stars Tovino Thomas, Aparna Balamurali, Tanvi Ram, Kunchacko Boban, Narain, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Lal with an ensemble supporting cast.[5][6][7]

Initially set to release on 21 April 2023, it eventually released on 5 May 2023. The film received critical acclaim with praise for the cast's performances, direction, screenwriting and cinematography. It grossed over ₹160 crores at the box office, to emerge as the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all-time and the seventh-highest grossing Indian film of 2023.[8][9]

Plot

The story takes place in Kerala during the 2018 floods. Anoop (Tovino Thomas) is an ex military officer who came back from the military after being scared of seeing soldiers dying in war. He is currently working in a small shop owned by a blind man Bhasi. Anoop is in love with Manju, a teacher, who recently joined the local government school. They are planning to get married. Anoop is trying to go to Dubai, so he asks his friend Rameshan (Vineeth Sreenivasan) to help him get the visa. Rameshan is not on good terms with his wife, she wants to get divorced from him, but he is not ready to get divorced; so, he hasn't returned to Kerala for some years. Rameshan hasn't informed his mother about the problems between him and his wife. His wife is currently living in her parent's house.

Then the story shows a truck driver, Sethupathi, who hates Malayalis. His village is experiencing drought for the past few years. A TV reporter, Noora, is shown reporting on scarcity of water in Sethupathi’s village, when he hits her car on purpose (after seeing it is registered in Kerala) for parking on the road. The story then shows Noora in Kerala; her mother is admitted in hospital and her father is taking care of her mother in the hospital. Noora lives with her brother who is a game addict. Noora then gets a phone call from some protestor who demands why the news channels are not talking about them anymore and why they didn't get justice until now. She declined to answer by saying that she is late for her work. The protestors became angry and decided to make a violent move by making bombs and throw it at a factory. So, they contact a Tamil dealer to buy explosives. The dealer contacts Sethupathi to deliver the explosives to Kerala, he also advises Sethupathi to hide the explosives in between groceries so that the police won't find it. Sethupathi agrees and collects his advance from the dealer.

The story then shows Shaji, a government officer, who works at damage control department. He receives a call from his senior officer asking him about the information of some fishermen who got lost in a storm that occurred in the sea for the past few days.

Then the story shows us Mathachan (Lal) a fisherman, he and his son Winston save the lost fishermen and bring them back to the shore. Mathachan has two sons – one is Winston and the other is Nixon (Asif Ali). Winston is married and has a daughter. Nixon who hates fishing is a model in Kochi and is in love with Jiji, the daughter of Chandy, a businessman. Chandy refuses permission for their marriage because of Nixon's fishing background and humiliates Mathachan and his family. Chandy has a son who is a friend of Anoop.

Then the story shows the mother of Rameshan calling her daughter-in-law. She asks her what is the problem between Rameshan and her, but she accidentally slips and falls. Her daughter-in-law came and took her to the hospital. Upon knowing this, Rameshan prepares to come back to Kerala.

Because of rain, Idukki Dam is opened and Noora reported on this. Whereas Anoop was preparing for his wedding by giving out the invitation cards to people at Shaji’s housewarming party. Shaji is also a friend of Anoop.

Mathachan and his family were packing to go to the relief camps when Nixon told them that he has to go to Kochi for a photoshoot. Winston became angry and shouts at Nixon for leaving the family in an emergency situation. A fight broke out between Winston and Nixon. Mathachan comes and slaps Nixon and shouts at him. Angry, Nixon leaves his family.

The rain increases and floods start occurring. Anoop's village starts to get drowned in the water. Shaji's office is converted into an emergency department. Rameshan's flight was unable to land in Kochi, so it instead landed in Coimbatore from where he takes a train back to Kerala with a Tamil person. Mathachan and Winston watch about the flood on the TV at the relief camps.

The Chief Minister has an urgent meeting with the officials who inform him that the army will come tomorrow. The Chief Minister worries as thousands of people are stuck in villages, and they have to be saved by tonight. The school at Anoop's village is converted into a relief camp.

The officials along with Shaji are added to a WhatsApp group called 'Save Kerala'. The group gave exact information about the flood. So, Shaji decides to put up a message in the WhatsApp group asking people to help. Hundreds of people came to rescue the people stuck in the villages.

Mathachan and his son Winston along with other villagers take their boats to Anoop's village to save people. Anoop also helps them by making his own boat from bamboo and saves people and moves them to the relief camp.

The train in which Rameshan was travelling got into an accident. He and the Tamil person walk miles before reaching highway. They stop a truck which was driven by Sethupathi with explosives. They then travel with Sethupathi. Nixon also came back to help his family. It is then shown that in a landslide the house built by Shaji gets destroyed. Shaji worries about his family.

Koshy a taxi driver is given a job to show the city to a Polish couple. But got stuck in the flood so he and polish couples now lives in Anoop's house.

Mathachan while repairing the roof of the releif camp fell down. And the roof fell on him killing him brutally.

Sethupathi after watching about people stuck in flood had a change of heart. He throws the explosives away and give the groceries to a releif camp in Anoop's villag. Anoop helps the Air force who were rescuing a pregnant lady.

Anoop then goes to a house where a couple and their mentally illed child were stuck. Anoop saves them while returning to the camp. Anoop saw the Blind shopkeeper Bhasi who was stuck at his house. Anoop called out for Bhasi. Bhasi then fell into water. Anoop saves Bhasi. But anoop drowns and dies while saving Bhasi.

After some times the flood went away and everything came back to normal. The village built a monument honouring Anoop for his good works.

Anandu Suresh of IndianExpress.com gave the film 4/5 stars and wrote, "The makers quickly establish that rain is a pervasive and influential character in the movie".[14] S.R.Praveen, film critic of The Hindu noted that, "Jude Anthany Joseph's technically solid recreation of the floods is a message of unity too".[15] Onmanorama's reviewer wrote that, "Everyone is a Hero' is a well-balanced film that will leave you satisfied, and keep you engaged till the end".[16]
