Jesús Ociel Baena Saucedo (9 December 1984 – 13 November 2023) was a Mexican activist and electoral magistrate at the State Electoral Court of Aguascalientes. On 1 October 2022, they became the first non-binary magistrate in Latin American history.[1][2][3]
Baena was born in Saltillo, Coahuila. They earned a bachelor's and master's degree in law from the Autonomous University of Coahuila, and a doctorate in electoral law from the Autonomous University of Durango. Before being appointed magistrate, Baena worked as an electoral secretary at the National Electoral Institute and as a professor of electoral law at the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes.[4]
Their accomplishments were covered by CNN en Español and the segment was nominated in the 34th GLAAD Media Awards.[5]
Baena, along with their partner, was found dead in their home in the city of Aguascalientes on 13 November 2023, at the age of 38.[2][6][7][8] Federal Security Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez said it was unclear whether it was a homicide or an accident of some kind, and state authorities said there was no indication any third parties had entered their home.[9]
