Wicked Little Letters is a 2023 British black comedy mystery film directed by Thea Sharrock and written by Jonny Sweet. The film stars Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley in the lead roles, along with Anjana Vasan, Joanna Scanlan, Gemma Jones, Malachi Kirby, Lolly Adefope, Eileen Atkins and Timothy Spall in supporting roles.

Wicked Little Letters premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, and is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on 23 February 2024, by StudioCanal.

Premise

Based on a true scandal that stunned 1920s England, the story centres on neighbours Edith Swan and Rose Gooding in the seaside town of Littlehampton. One day, a series of obscene letters begin to target Edith and others, with suspicion falling upon Rose. As the outrageous letters continue to escalate, Rose risks losing both her freedom and custody of her daughter. Police Officer Gladys Moss (Vasan) is determined to find the real culprit, and along with a group of other women, seeks to solve this perplexing mystery.[3]

Production

The film was announced in May 2022, with Thea Sharrock set to direct, and Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley starring.[4] In September, the cast was rounded out, with Anjana Vasan, Timothy Spall, Gemma Jones, and Eileen Atkins among the additions.[5]

Production began in September 2022,[5] with Ben Davis serving as cinematographer.[6] Production occurred in Arundel and Worthing in early October.[7]

Release

The film's world premiere was at the Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September 2023.[2][8][9] In November 2023, Sony Pictures Classics acquired North American and Chinese distribution rights to the film, with its sister company Stage 6 Films having acquired multiple international rights prior.[10] It is scheduled to be released in theatres in the United Kingdom on 23 February 2024.[8][11]

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 65% of 20 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.1/10.[12] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 57 out of 100, based on 8 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.[13]
