1871 founded organization of same name

[edit]

There was apparently an organization also named "The London Co-operative Society" formed in January 1871, as a way of "extending the Co-operative principle of trading to the public generally" which operated retail stores, the first of which opened in May 1871. Seven stores were open by mid-1872. First year sales of the Co-operative were £18,000, which compared favorable with first year sales by the Civil Service Supply Association, at £21,000, and of the Civil Service Co-operative Society, at £14,000, which together in 1872 had sales in excess of £1,000,000. As of 1872, the shareholders numbered 800, with 2,200 "tickets" sold, which I take to be annual memberships.
