History
Russian invasion of Ukraine
On 24 March 2024, the Ukrainian general staff and open-source intelligence sources reported that Yamal and her sister ship Azov were hit by cruise missiles while they were in their home port of Sevastopol.[1][2] Eyewitnesses reported explosions during the night.[3] Satellite images later showed that Azov, Yamal and Ivan Khurs had not been sunk.[4][5] However, Ukrainian sources later claimed that Yamal had been critically damaged in the attack.[6][7]
