Sunan al-Daraqutni, (Arabic: سنن الدارقطني), is a book of Hadith (narrations of the Islamic Muhammad) collected by the Muhaddith (Hadith collector) Imam Al-Daraqutni (306 – 385 AH).[1][2][3]
Description
The total number of Hadiths in this book are 4836 according to al-Maktaba al-Shamila. In this book al-Daraqutni collected the Moudu (fabricated) and Dhaif (weak in Narration) Hadiths, and al-Daraqutni also mentioned Sahih (Authentic) Hadiths as well in the book's capacity as a 'Sunan' .[4][5]
Criticism
Hadiths collected by Imam Daraqutni in his book include Moudu' (Fabricated) and Daeef (weak in Narration). Most of the Muhadditheen (Hadith Collectors) agree that the mention of a hadith in a book does not mean that it is allowed to be relied upon.
Imam Ibn-e-Taymiyyah said "Daraqutni used to mention the غرائب السنن (lesser-known Sunnah)" so simply the mention of a hadith in his book, does not show its credibility, nor does a inclusion of a hadith show its inauthenticity. Ibn-e-Taymiyyah's commentary does not refer to Imam Daraqutni collecting fabricated Hadiths for the sake of their avoidance and recogition, rather the words غرائب السنن refer to Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, which are lesser known among the Muslims leading to the inclusion of weak and fabricated traditions, as well as authentic ones.[6][7]
According to a research paper submitted at the International Conference on Humanities, the researchers found the methods used by Imam Daraqutni to be reliable “The research findings show that al-Daraqutni’s methods was neither corrupted nor weak as alleged but had firm footing in the methodologies previously practiced by hadith scholars in ancient times.”[8] According to the paper, this relates to Imam Daraqutni's criticism on Sahih al-Bukhari, and Imam Nanawi's criticism on him.
