Friday Night Funkin is an upcoming rhythm video game developed by Funkin' Crew Inc. and released on Newgrounds in 2020.[4] The game is developed by a small group called The Funkin' Crew Inc., which consists primarily of Cameron "ninjamuffin99" Taylor, David "PhantomArcade" Brown, Isaac "Kawai Sprite" Garcia, evilsk8r. The game is also open-source.[a] It shares some gameplay features with Dance Dance Revolution, PaRappa the Rapper, and the "Dance Contest" minigame from Club Penguin, and borrows aesthetic influences from Flash games.[5] The game has been credited with driving users back to Newgrounds, a site that rose in popularity in the early 2000s.

The game revolves around the player character, Boyfriend, who must defeat a variety of opponents in singing and rapping contests in order to continue dating his love interest, Girlfriend. Gameplay involves hitting notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health for the duration of the song.[6][7]

The game was initially created for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam on October 5, 2020.[8] An expanded demo was released on November 1, 2020, with updates continually released in the following months. A full version of the game backed by Kickstarter, titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game, is in development.[9]

Characters

The only characters that constantly repeat themselves within the game are Boyfriend, a young blue-haired rapper who has a backwards cap, and Girlfriend, a young white girl in a red dress who Boyfriend must rap to in order to complete the game's levels, which They are divided between different "weeks".

"Daddy Dearest" is the father of the bride, who is a former [[rock] star].[8] Seeks to test if the boyfriend he is skilled enough to earn her approval to court his daughter.

"Mommy Mearest" is the mother of the bride, and the wife of Daddy Dearest. She is a pop singer who also tests the boyfriend and performs with a team of backup dancers.[8]

"Skid and Pump" are a pair of children dressed in Halloween costumes. They are a cameo of some characters from the web animation series Spooky Month, by the YouTube animator called SrPelo.[8]

Pico, is a cameo from the game «Pico's School» by Tom Fulp, the creator of Newgrounds.[8]

Monster is a mysterious creature with a head similar to a lemon. It is a character that made its debut in the song called Monster. Monster later debuted in week 5 in the song "Winter Horrorland", where he torments the two main characters in a rap battle and wants to "eat Girlfriend".[8] He, along with with Girlfriend and Tankman, they are the only characters in the game who actually speak and sing in the game.

Senpai is a character who appears in a parody of a dating game called "Hating Simulator", which is played on a console that is itself a parody of a PlayStation. In the course of his battle with Boyfriend, he is later killed by an evil spirit, which was locked in the video game by Daddy Dearest to trap and lock Girlfriend's boyfriends in the video game.[8] Transforms during the song Thorns.

Tankman, the mascot of Newgrounds is the main protagonist of the TANKMEN series, an animated web series created by JohnnyUtah in 2006. [8] he Appears in the main logo of the page. The character, level and logo on the page are made in collaboration with artist Jonny Utah.

Darnell, also a character from "Pico's School" and "Darnell Plays With Fire", is a Pyromaniac of African descent and Pico's best friend. Although he does not appear directly in "Pico's School", a poster of him appears in the background of the game, saying that he only has 5 years to live.

Nene, another character from «Pico's School» and «Nene Interactive Suicide», is an Asian girl with bipolarity and suicidal tendencies, who appears in first time in "Pico's School", begging Pico to kill her

Argument

The main character, "'Boyfriend"', wants to date "'Girlfriend"', but his father, "'Daddy Dearest"', is not going to allow that, so they have a rap battle

(The "Weeks" are like levels in other games, here is a list of the weeks of the base game)

  • "'Tutorial Week (or just tutorial)"': it's a rap battle between "'Boyfriend"' and "'Girlfriend"', so the player knows how to play
  • "'Week 1"': Boyfriend has a rap battle with "'Daddy Dearest"', which falls defeated, features the songs: "Bopeebo", "Fresh" and "Dad battle".
  • "'Week 2"': "'Skid"' and "'Pump"' celebrate the month of Halloween as always, but now at Girlfriend's parents' house, and Monster (or "Lemon Demon" by the fans), wants Skid and Pump to bring Girlfriend to eat her. The week features the first 2 songs sung by Skid and Pump: "Spookez" and "South". The last one is sung by Monster, in the song of the same name, previously it could only be played in Freeplay or by game codes.
  • "'Week 3"': After the events of "Pico's School", Daddy Dearest hires ""Pico"" (a 20-year-old mercenary) to kill Boyfriend after being humiliated by him in week 1, when Pico finds Boyfriend, spares his life and instead of killing him challenged him to a rap match. This week features the songs "Pico", "Philly" and "Blamed".
  • "'Week 4"': Boyfriend confronts Girlfriend's mother, "'Mommy Meest"', riding in some limousines with dancers who seem to be demons, both driving them and dancing on top. After week 1, he is supposed to confront her afterwards after humiliating the father. This week has the songs called "Satin Panties", "High" and "M.I.L. F".
  • "'Week 5"': It's Christmas inside a shopping mall where Boyfriend confronts both parents in a battle while being surrounded by other characters. popular from Newgrounds. Week 5 features 2 songs performed by the parents ("Cocoa" and "Eggnog") before a blackout happens and it is revealed that Monster has taken over the premises. Monster sings the song "Winter Horrorland", which together with "Monster" are the only songs in the whole game with English lyrics instead of sound bytes (not counting the Tutorial).
  • "'Week 6"': Boyfriend and Girlfriend play "Hating Simulator", a fictional dating simulator from PS1, and fight against "'Senpai"'. At first he seems like a nice guy but in the second song he reveals his true colors when he loses his composure and threatens a Boyfriend with vulgar language. After the second song, Senpai killed by a soul trapped by Girlfriend's father called "'Spirit"' and wants revenge and also from other lost souls (they were other people who failed to be Girlfriend's partner). Boyfriend defeats him and runs away with Girlfriend. This week features the songs "Senpai", "Roses" and "Thorns".
  • "'Week 7"': Boyfriend and Girlfriend end up in the middle of a war with Tankman, the main mascot of Newgrounds (since his background appears in the logo of the page), who is about to assassinate them, but regrets it since according to him he was bored, and was challenging "Boyfriend" to a rap battle. When this one beats him, "Tankman" starts insulting them, so they have one more battle. At the end of this "Tankman" decides to kill them both anyway, but Pico arrives to save them at the last minute, then this week's antagonist has a final singing battle against Boyfriend while Pico is in charge of finishing off Tankman's army. This week was previously exclusive to Newgrounds. The names of the weeks are: "Ugh", "Guns" and "Stress". This week is the first one that features animations instead of dialog boxes.
  • "'Weekend 1: "' In this new week Released on April 30, an animation of Pico eating a hamburger and a drink appears. Then he meets up with Nene who was chasing him. Then Pico hides and remembers, that Daddy Dearest hired him to kill Boyfriend but spared his life. Then he helps him to take down Tankman and he and his friends didn't get paid and now his friends are terribly angry against Pico. The animation continues with Pico looking at the reflection of his gun and Nene throws 3 knives at him and there the chase begins. Pico runs as fast as he can and falls down with a ladder. Pico shoots a lever and the ladder falls on Nene. Then Pico takes advantage of running and crashes into a music display with nene taking the place of Girlfriend. Here Darnell appears graffitiing a wall and starts the week with the song Darnell to continue with the song Lit Up and later continue with 2hot. Here is another animation with Pico realizing that he has no bullets in his gun and that Darnell no longer has a fire in his lighter (lit in other countries) and Then another song called Blazin' starts with Pico fighting Darnell bare knuckles. The song ends with Pico giving Darnell a guppercut and knocking him to the floor. Darnell quickly responds with a kick to the face. Pico responds again with a punch to the face, Darnell returns the uppercut and Pico hits him in the stomach, Darnell uses the kick again, the scene skips to the aftermath of the fight, showing Darnell and Pico badly injured, they both decide to wipe their faces and hold hands then walk together and get down on the floor, meanwhile Nene angrily tears up the photo of BF and GF . the week ends with a black screen of Pico and Darnell Being Friends (Misspelled as "Freinds") again, although Nene is not entirely happy

He wears a confident-looking expression with a smile and is giving the V-sign with his left hand while holding a microphone in his right hand.
The game's main playable character, Boyfriend

Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game in which the player controls a character called Boyfriend, who must defeat a series of opponents in order to continue dating his significant other, Girlfriend. The player must pass multiple levels, referred to as "weeks" in-game, containing three songs each. Each week, the player faces a different opponent, though some deviate in structure from this via the inclusion of multiple opponents. During gameplay, the opponent will sing a pattern of notes (represented as arrows) which the player must then mirror by using the arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys. Some songs introduce more complicated patterns, with the player's pattern sometimes varying from the opponent's or both singers engaging in a duet.

For each week, the player has the option to select one of three difficulties: Easy, Normal, or Hard. As the difficulty increases, the speed of incoming arrows increases, and the patterns of arrows become more complex. The player's high score for each week on each difficulty is tracked and shown in the top corner of the week selection screen.[3][6] The game contains two different modes of play: a story campaign in which songs are played linearly, and a "free play" mode which allows for free selection of any of the game's music tracks.[6] Selected songs also have harder remixes under Erect and Nightmare difficulties.

Development

The logo used for the Ludum Dare Prototype version of the game

In October 2020, game programmer ninjamuffin99 began work on a game for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam. He asked artists evilsk8r and PhantomArcade to help him with the project, as both had experience in game development as well. A composer known as Kawai Sprite was also added to the team in order to create the songs featured in the game. The game was quickly assembled using a pre-made flash-to-haxe pipeline.

The prototype contained only a handful of music tracks and lacked menus. Despite its rudimentary design, the prototype received unexpected success, leading to many requests for a full game. In response, ninjamuffin99 stated that he had plans to expand the game.[8]

The team would later update this demo on November 1, 2020, which added several additional menus and options as well as Week 2, a new level. Interest in the game increased, with it quickly growing in notoriety on Newgrounds as it had received significant attention via platforms such as YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, and Twitch.

Week 7 was released as a timed exclusive on Newgrounds.[10] Due to the increase in traffic on Newgrounds, the site crashed.[11] After Week 7, the developers shifted focus on the full game, titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game.[12] Its soundtrack has been made available on Bandcamp and Spotify.[13]

In May 2024, a new week, titled "Weekend 1" was released. This was the biggest major update the game had seen since April 2021, when Week 7 was released. It features characters from the Pico's School series: Pico, Nene, and Darnell.[14]

Kickstarter

In April 2021, the developers announced plans to launch a Kickstarter project later in the month to turn the demo into a full game.[9] On April 18, a Kickstarter project for the full version of the game was released under the name Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game and reached its goal of $60,000 within hours.[15] The Kickstarter ultimately raised over $2 million.[16] In February 2022, IGN reported that Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game was one of the most funded Kickstarter projects of 2021.[17] The full game is planned to include a mobile version for Android[18] and iOS, remixes of the songs intended to be more difficult to play, online multiplayer, and multiple new levels.[19]

Merch

The game collaborated with Needlejuicerecords.com to make lunch boxes, shirts and figures based on the game.[20]

Reception

Modding

Friday Night Funkin' has an active modding community due to its open-source release, allowing for the implementation of fan-made content.[5][21][22] As a result, the full game will receive mod support using the Polymod framework.[23][24][25]

Notes

  1. ^ Friday Night Funkin' is licensed under the Apache License 2.0, per the game's license file, and it is described as "fully open source" by its developers in the readme file included with the game. However, the repository's readme file states, "IF YOU MAKE A MOD AND DISTRIBUTE A MODIFIED / RECOMPILED VERSION, YOU MUST OPEN SOURCE YOUR MOD AS WELL", implying a copyleft requirement. From May to August 2021, the license file simply stated "if u make mods, open source them, lol!"; the Apache License 2.0 was used prior to May. In a tweet, ninjamuffin99 stated that it gets "iffy" when non-code assets are used commercially. Since January 2023, the license file simply reads "SORTING OUT LICENSE STUFF!!! BRB LOL!".
