Zenless Zone Zero [a] is a free-to-play action role-playing game developed and published by miHoYo in mainland China, with global publishing by Cognosphere, d/b/a HoYoverse. The game was released on Windows, iOS, Android and PlayStation 5, on July 4, 2024.[2]

Gameplay

Zenless Zone Zero is an action role-playing game. The player assumes the role of a Proxy (the protagonist known as Wise or Belle), a character who helps others explore the hostile alternate dimensions called Hollows.[3][4] As they advance, the Proxy will recruit new members to their party as they continue to fight the Ethereal and other enemies. In addition to the Proxy, players also use assistants known as Bangboos.[4] By combining the abilities of different Proxies and Bangboos, players can deploy greater damage and combos onto enemies.[4][5][6]

The game features an in-game clock system, with the days split into morning, afternoon, night, and late-night.[4]

Setting

The game takes place in an post-apocalyptic futuristic haven known as New Eridu. Entities known as Ethereal have traveled out into the human world from portals called Hollows. The Ethereal have wreaked havoc on most of humanity, wiping most of them out. However, a select group of survivors have formed a bastion against the invaders called New Eridu, having survived the oncoming onslaught by extracting the Ethereal's technology and resources.[7][8]

Development

HoYoverse revealed the game in May 2022 and began holding closed beta tests, known as "Tuning Tests", for PC and iOS in August of the same year.[9] A second closed beta test, called an "Equalizing Test", was also held for PC and iOS in November 2023.[10] A third beta test, called an "Amplifying Test", was held for Android, PC, and iOS, in April 2024.[11] During PlayStation's State of Play presentation, a PlayStation 5 port of the game was announced.[12] A technical test was held for the PS5 in April 2024. The release date was announced in late May 2024.

Reception

Prior to the game's release, 17173 believed that action games were an area that MiHoYo was familiar with, and that Zenless Zone Zero was MiHoYo's return to the action game circuit and a breakthrough for the company. 17173 also believed that MiHoYo had not yet encountered any real rivals in the action game category, and that Zenless Zone Zero could "stabilize and expand the user's market". 17173 also claimed that Zenless Zone Zero was a "different work" created by Mihayo through a strong stylized design and extreme pursuit of trendy visual elements, while inheriting MiHoYo's best ACT category. 17173 also claimed that Zenless Zone Zero is MiHoYo way of "inheriting the best ACT category, and at the same time, creating a different work through strong stylized design and extreme pursuit of trendy visual elements".[14]

The game was released on July 4 to generally positive reviews, with suggesting that the game is poised to surpass MiHoYo's previous heights and become another outstanding title in its portfolio. Reviewers called the combat and day-to-day exploration exciting, and the world setup unique and immersive.[15]
