Alejo Panozzo

Alejo Panozzo (born March 1st, 2002) is an Argentinian actor, musician and screenwriter. He rose to prominesce in the early 2010s as the main protagonist of the comedy and drama series Pibes, for which he gained critical acclaim and made him a two-time Martin Fierro Awards winner. He is also the highest-charting Argentinian actor of the last decade. After quitting acting for a undetermined time, he created the alternative rock band Jovenes Joviales, which debut studio album made him winner of the Latin Grammy Awards.

Panozzo was born and raised in Mercedes, Corrientes. He was educated in a fine arts academy from a young age, and was quickly spotted by a talent agency after he gained a reputation for his perfomances in the local theatre of his native city. He was casted as Facundo Pisani when he was 12 years old, and starred in the critically-acclaimed series Pibes (2014-2019) for five seasons until the series ending in November 2019. Aside from his work in television, he also starred in the box-office bomb Metegol (2013) and the indie film Dos disparos (2014). During the last-half of the decade, he started to collaborate with Argentinian filmmakers Ana Katz and Clarisa Navas and starred in the high-charting and critical-acclaimed movies Hoy, partido a las tres (2017), Sueño florianopolis (2018), y El principe de Nawama (2019). After the COVID-19 pandemic, Panozzo decided to quit acting for a undetermined time.

In 2019, Panozzo announced the formation of a alternative rock band Jovenes Joviales, with multi-instrumentalist and record producer Lautaro Reyna, who he met during the production of Pibes. In 2020, the band incorporated singer and song-writer Maggie Teleham and formalized the trio. In 2021, the band published their debut studio album, Jovenes Joviales Vol. 1. The album won the Latin Grammy award for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album, and spawned the top 10 single "Todo Lo Que Ella Quiera". After their worldwide tour in 2022, the band announced their new upcoming sophomore album in 2024.

Panozzo won the Martin Fierro Award for Best actor in the 2014 and 2018 editions, and was the youngest actor to ever receive the Martin Fierro de Oro in 2019. He was awarded by Argentine Film Critics Association in 2019, and was nominated for both Best New Actor and Best Actor in the Goya Awards. He was named a "Outstanding personality of Argentian culture" by the Buenos Aires legislature in 2021. In 2022, he was awarded the Konex Award for Brilliance, due to "his major impact in Argentinian culture for the fine arts, and the renaissance of interest that he archieved in the Argentinian youth".

Biography

Alejo Panozzo was born March 1st in Mercedes, Corrientes, the youngest child of the marriage between Raúl Julio Panozzo, a veterinarian and farm-worker, and Marcela Malvina, a sports kinesiologist. He has a strong Italian ancestry, and actually obtenied Italian citizenship in November 2021. He is also descendent of Paraguayan and Spanish heritage from his mother's side.

Raised in Mercedes, Panozzo assisted public school Escuela Normal Manuel F. Mantilla. During his years as an infant, Panozzo was described as a "problematic and anxious student", who would usually perform funny stunts and comments "just to make his classmates laugh". He was named a "class-clown", and was frequently punished by school authorities and teachers for his rowdiness. Despite his troubled conducts, Panozzo developed a sensitivity for literature and poetry at a young age, being able to read fluintly before his classmates. He was chosen to read speeches at school events and was praised for his oratory, being awarded a diploma for "influence his classmates to read" at the age of 8. He often interrupted his speeches to make funny quirks that would make the assiting public "burst out of laughing". He also played guitar and initially perfomed chamamé songs on family reunions, but later he switched up to electric guitar and started being part of the school band. He quit later on because "they always wanted to play boring pop songs, and I wanted to go punk, more fast-paced", he recalled. During a period of time, he was part of a hard rock local band, called "Los Hijos de Púa", where he also did lead vocals, and perfomed in various night venues, earning him a reputation among the music community in the area. It is also stated that he wrote his first songs during his time in the band, and was expelled by the leader for "outshining" him.

Just like his character in Pibes, Panozzo would hide from his classmates in school breaks to read texts by Maria Elena Walsh, Roberto Fontanarrosa and Julio Cortázar, and idiolize the writers in secret. Panozzo would tell his teachers that he wanted to became a writer and that he would write a renoun book when he was older. He was bullyied by older classmates for his interests and eventually scattered his passion for writers, blaming them for his bad reputation among his pairs. In his elementary years, Panozzo started acting as part of a school proyect lead by his English teacher, who adapted famous Disney movies and Shakespeare texts as theatre plays. Panozzo had his breakthrough with his perfomances as Peter Pan and Petruchio (from Shakeapere's The Taming of the Shrew) when he was 10 years old. He continued to be part of other plays and was distinguished by the local newspaper and TV channel. A talent agency spotted him during one his plays and eventually reach out to him. They offered him to be part of a casting for a TV show for young audiences, to which he refused, thinking that it would be a Cris Morena proyect, known in Argentina for his soap opera productions. The casting agency cleared to him that the TV show would be a total departure from the Argentinian shows that were popular at the time, so Panozzo eventually accepted.

Private life

Panozzo lives in Buenos Aires, and has residencies in Mercedes, his native city, and in Florence, Italy, where his ancestors came from. He has two older brothers, Alvaro (born 1995), a vet, and Gonzalo (born 1992), a translator, with the latter one appearing in public events with him. Even though during his early years Panozzo has been constantly a subject media matter due to his celebrity status as a teen idol, he started to avoid media attention, stating "It's very weird for me to see people putting more attention towards me taking out my dogs rather than my actual work, that i put my passion and time for".

Panozzo is a lifelong fan of football club Boca Juniors and has assisted to various games in La Bombonera. He idiolizes Juan Román Riquelme. He said that his favorite bands are Serú Girán and Invisible. Panozzo recalls that his hobbies are skating, biking, and playing videogames. He named Half-Life 2 and Resident Evil 2 as his favorite games of all time.

Panozzo is in a public relationship with Carolina Anselmo, the daughter of Norma Anselmo. They met each other on the set of Pibes, and eventually started dating, even though Panozzo was afraid of Norma's approval. He said that she was founded glad of their relationship when they revealed to her. Carolina is a fashion designer, and both of them have various collaborations on each others projects.

Panozzo has identified himself as peronist, but he drew distance to politics in the midst of the 2023 Argentine general election. He stated support towards election winner candidate Javier Milei, saying "I found myself conflicted towards these elections. I choose to believe in the election of the people. As a Argentine civil, it is my duty to wish my best support to Milei. I'll always see my country with positivism". Previously, he heavily critized the attempt at closing INCAA and showed himself in the protests in Plaza de Mayo when it happened. He also stated his support towards public education in the protests for the lack of economic support from Milei's government.
