WAVS started out in the late '60's or around 1970 on 1190 AM as a news talk station (Sally Jesse worked there before she was known as Sally Jesse Raphael) with 5000 watts daytime only and licensed to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The station moved to 1170 AM and currently transmits with 5KW day and 250 watts night directional night and day. WAVS changed it's city of license to Davie, Florida, which is just to the southwest of Fort Lauderdale.

Both studio and transmitter are located in this city currently. The station features a Carribean format.
