Karunagappally is a town in Kollam district, Kerala, India

The place has a population of about 410,000 people. Karunagappally has been recently in the news during the 2006 Tsunami as one of the worst hit places in Kerala.

Karunagappally is well connected through roads (the NH 47 passes through Karunagappally) and rails. Kayamkulam town is adjacent to the North, and Kollam to the South.

The place has beautiful back-waters, which connects it to Kollam and Alappuzha. The famous Mata Amrithananthamayi Mathom is located at Vallikkavu, Karunagappally.

Karunagappally is situated 27 Kms north to Kollam. It is linked with Kollam by rail and road.

Padanayarkulangara, which forms part of the town, was once the military station of the Kayamkulam Raja (King). An idol of Buddha, recovered from a local tank here, has raised speculations that Karunagappally was once a centre of Buddhist teachings.

Karunagappally block consists of 4 Panchayats viz, Allappad, Karunagappally, Thodiyoor and Mynagappally, covering an area of 66.34 sq.kms.


Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Karunagappally had a population of 410514. Males constitute 199494 of the population and females 211020.Karunagappally has an average literacy rate of 89.5%, higher than the national average of 60.5%; with 52% of the males and 51% of females literate. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Sree Vidhyadhiraja Arts & Science College

Sree Vidhyadhiraja Arts & Science College, Thevarcavu, Karunagappally, was started in the name of the great saint Sree Vidyadhiraja Chattampi Swami in 1995. It is a private, unaided, college, owned and managed by Shree Vidyadhiraja Vidya Samajam of Thiruvananthapuram - a Charitable Educational Society registered under the Societies Registration Act.

The college offers degree courses in three faculties viz. Physics, Mathematics and Commerce. With a team of well-qualified teachers and fully equipped laboratories, the college is able to gratify the academic aspirations of the student community of the locality. The college which was functioning in a rented building is now shifted to a new spacious multi-storeyed building adjacent to the illustrious Thevarkavu Devi Temple.


College of Engineering, Karunagappally

Run by IHRD, College of Engineering,Karunagappally has been the leading technical institution in Kerala since it's venture in 2000. Affiliated to CUSAT, College of Engineering, Karunagappally offers B.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering,Computer Science & Engineering, and Information Technology. The institution is approved by AICTE, New Delhi and affiliated to CUSAT.It is under the management of IHRD (Institute of Human Resources Development), a Kerala Government undertaking.
