Monzelfeld

Monzelfeld is a village in Germany in the rural district of Bernkastel-Wittlich. It is located in the Hunsruck on the southern bank of the Moselle valley, 2 km from Bernkastel-Kues, at 450 m elevation. The village has 1340 inhabitants and an area of 12.5 km². It was first mentioned in the year 634. Traditionally an agricultural settlement until the 1960s, it is now mostly inhabitated by commuters working in the nearby cities of Bernkastel-Kues and Morbach. The main street of Monzelfeld is reminiscent of an old transport route passing through the village, 'Alte Poststrasse'. A fountain in the village center memorializes past mining activity in the small settlement of Annenberg. Monzelfeld is near Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (20 km). The village has its own primary school, kindergarten and Roman Catholic church (St. Stephanus). It is surrounded by hiking trails offering scenic views of the Moselle river valley, and the woods of the Hunsruck landscape. Its closest neighbouring villages are Longkamp and Morbach-Gonzerath.
