Opening Para Cleanup

This is how the opening abstract para goes...

Lionel Andrés Messi (born 25 June 1987 in Rosario, Argentina) is an Argentine football player, who currently plays as a second striker for FC Barcelona. He is often touted in the media as "the new Diego Maradona", along with his fellow youth team mates Javiniho Brytos and Ricardo Jussi, who have also been compared to the great "Diego Maradona" . This years World cup is a perfect stage for these three players to make a name for themselves for the Argentina National team.

I too hope Javiniho Brytos and Ricardo Jussi does well and go far. But as far as the topic goes, is it appropriate to speak about them as a trio in the description abstract of one of the players? Hope it is appropriate to remove the mention in this context?

Can already see User:Marianocecowski to have removed the stuff.. so this is done..

--Su30 14:18, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"From the age of 11, he suffered from a hormone deficiency and as his parents were unable to pay for treatment in Argentina, they decided to move to Barcelona, Spain. Shortly after arriving, Lionel tried his luck with a trial at FC Barcelona, despite being only 13 years of age." 79.66.109.152 23:10, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

His parents could not afford to pay for his treatment and Barcelona offered to pay his medical fees on the condition that they move to Spain and join FC Barcelona. Please change it.

Why should be circumstancials Mourinho's insidious comments?.

It's like if i would write: "Parreira don't select Ronaldo becouse he's thinking that him is 'fat'"

It's something circumstancial and inappropiate.

Contract Date Error

His contract is up to 2014 ... Not 2010. Like the article though ;)

Removed sentence

I've removed the sentence:

'Messi was selected in the Argentina squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup'.

The reason is that, as of May 14 2006, no list of the Argentina 2006 World Cup Squad has been made public. Remember Messi is still recovering from an injury which could complicate his participation in the World Cup. When and if he is included in such a list, we may reintroduce the sentence I removed again, if nobody minds. Cheers. Raystorm, 14 May 2006, 16:21h

Okay now we can reintroduce it. :) List was made public ten minutes ago, and he's in it. Check it out at: http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/futbol/camino_al_mundial/es/desarrollo/649017.html. Raystorm, 15 May 2006, 22.52h

Chance to play for Spain's team

Is it true or a rumor that when Julio H. Grondona (AFA's president) knew about Spain's intention of inviting him to play for the Spanish team, he set a friendly match with another national team just to make Messi play (and making him prohibited to play for any other national team according to FIFA's rule).

Rhe br 14:51, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the rumer exists [1]. Nevertheless, Messi also stated that he always wanted to play for Argentina. Mariano(t/c) 08:38, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tocalli (youth argentine national team manager) admited in public that he called him in purpose to the youth team for him to play for Argentina instead of Spain. If Grondona had anything to do with setting the match, I dont know, but Tocalli called him with that purpose. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.117.179.207 (talk) 19:16, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Added "Lio" to his nickname, common search engines returns +100.000 hits to "Lio" and Argentine press uses Lio rather than Leo.

Not the Youngest Player to Score a Goal for Barca

Lionel Messi is not the Youngest player to score a goal for Barcelona. The Legendary Paulino Alcántara was the youngest player to score a goal for Barca at 15 years of age, 4 months and 18 days. Alcántara holds the record for the youngest player to score a goal and also holds the record for most goals for Barca with an amazing 374 goals in 375 matches. --Ramirez 06:00 am 25 September 2006 (UTC)

He's the youngest to score in the league.

World's best young player?

Regarded by many as the worlds best young player? Surely that should be, one of the worlds best young players. After all there is also Fabregas, Ronaldo, Rooney, Podolski, Robinho, to name a few that may have something to say about this. UncleTheOne

Not only being the best is subjective, being young also is. Mariano(t/c) 07:44, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Many Football pundits do consider him the worlds best young player.--Killingthedream 18:07, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say the Golden Boy and the FIFPro make it official. --SatoshiMiwa 10:35, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with SatoshiMiwa. He got 3 best world young player awards already (Golden Boy, FIFPro and WorldSoccer) Plus everything he got in the sub-20, Best young player of the Copa America, etc. A player can do no more to be regarded as the best young player of the world. Rooney won 2, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robinho won only 1 and they're older. None of them received the best player of the youth 20 world soccer either, but Messi did. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.30.162.156 (talk) 19:23, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Buy-out Clause

With regards to saying that Messi has the second highest buy-out clause in a contract, where on earth did the figure for Cristiano Ronaldo come from? In my understanding, buy-out clauses are illegal in British football.

How to block special users from posting something stupid?

I want user 88.105.223.100 to be blocked for long term, cause the thing that he is writting here and stupid language, specially non-stoping. I was reading Leo Messi Biography when i saw that "media discribed him as a diver" , and how chelsea tried to buy him etc...!!?? I knew what went wrong and i tried to return the page as it was before, and i will for other unnormal things, hoping that this would be my contribution to wikipedia.

Messis height

I have heard that on his ongoing treatment he is 1.72 cms by now, do you know if this fact is properly correct? --Andersmusician VOTE 03:56, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

French fan site - is it acceptable?

The following has been added to External Links:

This is a French fan site. Even though the poster posted as "messi19.iespana.es" it actually redirects to "www.mesi.fr". It is a personal site from a fan somebody adoring Messi. Although it seems to contain some up to date information, it also contains advertising and a button to pay through Paypal to maintain the site. It seems it runs counter to WP:EL, especially #4.3 and #5 but was not 100% sure in this case as several other EL sites in other player's articles suffer from the same issue. I moved it here to gather consensus for a few days. Keep or delete? -- Alexf(t/c) 20:39, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Contract Length?

I was looking at the contract length, and it says he has one at Barca till 2014. But I looked at an interview he gave to UEFA, and he says I have a 4 year contract, and this was in 2007. Did he sign a new contract since May 4 2007? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.210.172.241 (talk) 19:51, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
