Lieutenant William George Foster was awarded the George Cross for the heroism he displayed on the 13th of September, 1942 [1]when his prompt actions saved his comrades after a grenade accident during training in Ashley Hill, Clarendon Park, near Salisbury in Wiltshire. He was attached to the 7th Wiltshire (Salisbury) Battalion of the Home Guard at the time. Notice of his citation was published in the London Gazette of the 27th of November 1942.

He was born at sea on the 12th December 1881 and fought in the Boer War with the 2nd Imperial Light Horse, returning to Britain after being seriously wounded. After being discharged as medically unfit he rejoined the army, the Royal (London) Fusiliers (4th batallion) and fought in the Great War at Ypres and Mons, three times (17/02/15, 30/06/15, 16/05/16) being mentioned in dispatches. He won the Distinguised Service Medal and the Military Cross in 1916 while serving with the 3rd Batallion The Royal Fusiliers.
