TV Brasil is a non-profit public broadcasting television channel in Brazil to be founded on December 2, 2007. Although TV Cultura is the first public broadcasting channel founded in the country, TV Brasil is the first to be founded by the federal government.

History

TV Brasil was created through a decree of the Empresa Brasil de Comunicação published in October 25, 2007 in the Diário Oficial da União, Brazil's official gazette. It originated from the fusion of the Empresa Brasileira de Comunicação - Radiobrás and the Associação de Comunicação Educativa Roquette Pinto (Acerp), responsible for the now defunct TVE Brasil - which was replaced by TV Brasil.

The lack of necessary equipment avoided that TV Brasil premiered in national broadcasting. It will premiere only in three cities (Rio de Janeiro, Brasília and São Luís) before expanding to the rest of the country. Its programming will, however, also be available through its official website.

Programming

In its first months, the stations of TV Brasil will broadcast four hours a day of regional programing. It will also broadcast Brazilian films and programs made by other public television channels. The programming of will be divided into four: children, animation, audio-visual, citizenship and sports.

Franklin Martins, the national secretary of social communication, has commented that TV Brasil's programming is not yet fully prepared and may suffer from last hour changes. He hopes the programming to be settled until March 2008. Martins also said that he wishes that public opinion polls to be conducted to determine the programming.
