Nicole Wray

Nicole Monique Wray (born July 1 1981), better known as Nicole Wray, is an American R&B, pop, and hip hop singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, and model. Wray first rose to fame when she sang on rapper and music producer Missy Elliott's debut album, Supa Dupa Fly.

After working in the studio with Brian Alexander Morgan, Mocha, Missy Elliott, Suga Mike, and other producers, Wray released her debut album, Make It Hot, in 1998. It contained the top five Billboard Hot 100 single "Make It Hot".

Early life

Wray is the second oldest of three children to Kenneth and Debra Wray. She was born in Salinas, California and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia. She has a younger sister, Myrtis Wray, and an older brother, Kenny Wray.

At the age of seventeen, Wray met the rapper Missy Elliott. She sang for Elliott and was invited to join her in the music business.

Music career

Make It Hot

Nicole became close friends with mentor Missy Elliott. Elliott was so impressed with Nicole's talent she signed her as the first artist on her label, The Goldmind Inc. In 1997, Nicole appeared on Elliott's debut album, Supa Dupa Fly. After appearing on the track "Gettaway", Nicole worked with producers including Elliott, Brian Alexander Morgan, and Timbaland on her first album. During the summer of 1998, Nicole released her first album, Make It Hot[1]. The album's first single was "Make It Hot", featuring her labelmate, rapper Mocha and mentor Missy Elliott. It reached No.5 on the U.S charts. Nicole's second single, "I Can't See", hit the Rhythmic Top 40 at No. 36. Later that year, Nicole released a song, "Without You," which appeared on the soundtrack to the film Why Do Fools Fall in Love.

In 1999, Nicole released the third single off of her debut album, "Eyes Better Not Wander", which would peak at No. 71 on the U.S R&B charts. The album was certified Gold in 1999 selling 700,000 copies to date. Nicole also appeared on Missy Elliott's second album, Da Real World, on her second single, "All N My Grill".

Elektric Blue

In 1999, Nicole announced that she would be getting back into the studio to work on her second studio album. In 2000, Nicole finished working and writing the album entitled Elektric Blue[2] though its release date was pushed to 2001. In 2001, Nicole released the first single from the album, "I'm Lookin'." In late 2001, Nicole left Elektra Records without releasing the Elektric Blue album. Shortly after Nicole's departure from Elektra Records and The Goldmind Inc., Nicole and Elliott ended their business relationship. Nicole recorded a song in 2003 entitled "I Wanna Kiss You," which appeared on the soundtrack to the film Love Don't Cost a Thing.

Lovechild

In 2004, Nicole released the single "If I Was Your Girlfriend" and signed to Roc-A-Fella Records who had given her the title "First Lady at Roc" and "Betty Boo". Nicole was later placed with the Dame Dash Music Group where she began working on her third albumLovechild,[3][4] which included the singles "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "Can't Get Out of the Game" and "Regrets" [5][6]. But in 2005, She dropped her deal with the Dame Dash Music Group, after rapper Jay-Z left the label.

Fourth studio album

According to Nicole's myspace page, she has been working on her fourth studio album since 2006.[7] The same source announced that she signed to a new record company, A.Fam Entertainment Inc. In 2007, Nicole released her InDepenDance Day mixtape. In late 2007, Wray told Spotlight Grooves in an interview she hasn't decided on an album title but her and Focus are "going make people feel the music like on her last album Make It Hot. [8] Later that year, Wray appeared on Hurricane Chris's album 51/50 Ratchet.

On January 3, 2008, Wray premiered her new single "Stand Up"[9] on her MySpage page. She is encouraging her fans to support and spread the word of her new single. On January 5, Wray released the single to radio stations.[10]

Modeling and magazines

It has also been said that Nicole has been modeling for television commercials. Nicole has been modeling for the company Baby Phat. In 2005, Nicole was seen on the cover of Smooth Girls magazine. Late that year, She was spotted modeling of the cover of VIBE magazine.
